SUMMARY:Local Power\, Local Industry: Aligning Heavy Manufacturing with the Transmission Development Plan
DESCRIPTION:Dear Valued Stakeholder\, \nThe National Business Initiative (NBI)\,GIZ and Prime Africa Consult invite you to a dialogue on how the scale of the Transmission Development Plan (TDP) presents a unique opportunity to revitalise South Africa’s heavy manufacturing sector. \nSouth Africa’s energy landscape is undergoing a significant transformation\, with the TDP 2024 – 2032 outlining an ambitious roadmap to expand the national grid. The plan envisions the addition of 56GW new capacity\, 14\,500 kilometers of new transmission lines and 210 transformers over the next decade. R112Bn has been approved for the TDP until 2030. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n This expansion is critical to alleviate current grid constraints that hinder the integration of renewable energy sources\, particularly from regions like the Northern\, Western\, and Eastern Cape. The successful implementation of the TDP is pivotal for ensuring energy security and supporting South Africa’s commitment to a just energy transition. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n The country possesses the capability to locally produce a significant portion of the components required for the transmission and distribution value chain\, including powerline-related products and components. Leveraging this capacity can stimulate industrial growth\, create employment opportunities\, and reduce reliance on imports. Alignment of the TDP with industrial policy objectives can bolster growth in the heavy manufacturing sector through various incentives and enhance the competitiveness of local manufacturers in the shifting global market. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n What to expect \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n \nWe will illuminate the nexus of grid expansion and industrial development: To build shared understanding of how the TDP can be a powerful catalyst for reindustrialisation\, localisation\, and economic resilience.\nWe will highlight key opportunities: To present actionable insights on the role of local manufacturers in supplying components. \nWe will foster dialogue: To initiate discussion among business\, government\, and civil society on how to align industrial policy\, procurement strategies\, skills development\, and financing to support the localisation of grid infrastructure and to build a collaborative foundation for advancing a just and job-rich energy transition.\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n Speaker Line Up \n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n \nAlex McNamara: Environment Unit Head\, National Business Initiative (NBI)\nGregor Schmorl: Climate Cluster Coordinator\, The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ)\nKabir Singh: Chief Engineer\, National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA)\nTafadzwa Chibanguza: CEO (designate)\, Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (SEIFSA)\nMarco Vieira: Technical Director\, Prime Africa ® Consult\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n Programme \n \n \n \n Click Here to Register

SUMMARY:Online Workshop: Climate Finance for Transforming South Africa’s Energy Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:A research team at the University of Cape Town (UCT) is undertaking some exciting new research on climate finance for transforming our energy infrastructure as part of an international project on Strengthening National Climate Policy Finance Implementation (SNAPFI). \nThe UCT team and the National Business Initiative (NBI) have the pleasure of inviting you to attend the second workshop on climate finance for transforming our energy infrastructure\, to present findings of the South African case study for the first year of this international research initiative. \nThe first workshop which took place on 6th November 2019 kicked off a multi-stakeholder engagement on the transformation of the South African electricity infrastructure. The South African case study will be included in an international set of case studies and learning with teams in Brazil\, India\, Indonesia and Europe. \nWe would hope to get your feedback before we finalise this piece of research. Please feel free to forward this invitation to colleagues with an interest in climate-finance-policy issues. \nKindly click here for the project description and here for the draft case study. \nRegister here. \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n Dear Valued Stakeholder\, \nThe National Business Initiative (NBI)\,GIZ and Prime Africa Consult invite you to a dialogue on how the scale of the Transmission Development Plan (TDP) presents a unique opportunity to revitalise South Africa’s heavy manufacturing sector. \nSouth Africa’s energy landscape is undergoing a significant transformation\, with the TDP 2024 – 2032 outlining an ambitious roadmap to expand the national grid.
