SUMMARY:Just Transition Pathways Project: Public release of the mining sector and the petrochemicals and chemicals sector decarbonisation reports
DESCRIPTION:The decarbonisation report chapters for both the mining as well as the petrochemicals and chemicals sectors are now ready to be shared! We are excited for you to join us as we release these findings as part of the broader NBI-BUSA-BCG Just Transition Pathways project for public consultation. \nThe National Business Initiative (NBI) launched the Just Transition Pathways research project in 2020 in partnership with Business Unity South Africa (BUSA) and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Together\, with a broad range of stakeholders\, including business\, government\, civil society and academia\, we sought to identify decarbonisation pathways for key sectors of the South African economy\, aligned with the goal of net zero emissions by 2050. This was done to show that it is indeed possible to decarbonise our economy and to ensure a Just Transition. \nA Just Transition is an opportunity for South Africa to manage both physical climate and transition risks\, effectively contributing to global climate response efforts and addressing our current socio-economic challenges. In the wake of the devastating COVID-19 pandemic\, a Just Transition offers a way to foster an inclusive and equitable economic recovery and growth\, unlocking green investment opportunities and economic competitiveness for key sectors. This part of our Just Transitions project seeks to identify techno-economic decarbonisation pathways for key sectors of our economy and highlight what critical decisions and actions are necessary to enable a Just Transition for South Africa. \nThese report chapters summarise the results from the development of both the mining as well as petrochemicals and chemicals sector decarbonisation pathways towards net zero emissions by 2050. \nJoin the webinar on 12th October 2021 as we highlight what the possible decarbonisation pathways could look like for each of these sectors and consider their implications and opportunities for South Africa.

SUMMARY:The public release of the Power Sector Decarbonisation Report from the NBI Just Transition Pathways project - Our future is renewable
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to share the first in a series of report chapters on the decarbonisation pathways for the South African economy. Join us on 11th August 2021 as we release the findings of the NBI Just Transition Pathways project for the South African power sector as a draft chapter for public consultation. \nBackground: \nSouth Africa and her people are extremely vulnerable to the physical risk of climate change and our economy is vulnerable to the transition risk presented by a rapid global trend to a low-carbon future. This trend is driven by the dire need to cut greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change globally. We also need to consider green industrialisation as an opportunity to get us out of the global economic crisis triggered by the devastating COVID-19 Pandemic. To support our economic recovery and ensure long term competitiveness and social resilience in the face of future climate and transition risk\, South Africa needs a Just Transition plan or we will risk getting left behind. We therefore need to work toward a goal of net zero emissions by 2050. \nIt is also essential that the South African business community is able to contribute constructively to conversations around what a just transition looks like in South Africa.  Our future must be ecologically and economically sustainable and just to ensure no one is left behind. \nIn response to the above imperatives\, the NBI launched the Just Transition Pathways research project in 2020 in partnership with Business Unity South Africa (BUSA) and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Together with participation from a broad range of stakeholders from business\, government\, civil society\, and academia\, we sought to identify decarbonisation pathways for key sectors of the South African economy aligned with net zero emissions by 2050. This was done to show that it is indeed possible to decarbonise our economy and to ensure a just transition. \nThis report chapter summarises the results from the power sector study and charts the technical and socio-economic pathway to net zero emissions by 2050. Two key findings of this report are: \n\nBy leveraging its world class renewable energy sources\, South Africa can fully decarbonise its power sector\, while unlocking the opportunity to stimulate economic growth and job creation.\nThe transformation of South Africa’s power system can result in net-positive job creation\, if South Africa can successfully localise elements of the renewable energy value chain and effectively re-skill the workforce.\n\nJoin the webinar on 11 August 2021 to learn more about the results and consider implications and opportunities for South Africa with our multistakeholder panel.

SUMMARY:Climate Finance Accelerator South Africa Launch
DESCRIPTION:The year 2021 is pivotal in the race to tackle climate change\, and countries have a limited amount of time for action. Responding effectively to this global challenge involves a massive transformation in financial markets. The scale of financial and other resources needed to achieve this transformation is in the order of hundreds of billions of US dollars.   \nThis transformation must involve a country-driven shift toward policies and technologies that catalyse new investments and mainstream climate change into existing systems\, as articulated in countries’ climate commitments. South Africa requires a clear pathway to financing and implementing its climate targets as part of achieving a just transition for the country. \nA key barrier to climate action is the shortage of projects able to attract the finance and investment necessary for large-scale implementation. The financing available and the capacities to absorb such resources vary across different countries\, something which the National Business Initiative (NBI) and GreenCape have worked to address in South Africa over the past few years. \nNBI in partnership with GreenCape have recently been appointed as the delivery partners for the Climate Finance Accelerator (CFA) in South Africa. The CFA is a technical assistance programme funded by UK International Climate Finance\, globally led by PwC\, in collaboration with Ricardo. \nThe main objective of the CFA programme is to improve the flow of climate finance in South Africa which will support the implementation of South Africa’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)\, thereby delivering emissions reductions and raising overall climate ambition. \nThe CFA: \n\nOffers opportunities for project developers\, financiers and policy makers to work together to identify funding options to get capital flowing to low carbon projects\, with the aim of enabling the development of a pipeline of low carbon projects.\nWill help to turn potential investment opportunities into fully funded projects. It aims to unlock great ideas and transformative technologies by enabling projects that would otherwise remain on the drawing board to be financed.\nWill also contribute to embedding a permanent CFA process in South Africa which will create a sustainable model for leveraging private capital to help fund the NDC and reduce emissions.\n\nThe NBI\, GreenCape\, the British High Commission Pretoria\, the Department for Business Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the CFA team are pleased to invite you to attend the launch of CFA South Africa to provide targeted support for expanding South Africa’s pipeline of climate projects able to attract finance.   \nThe objectives of the launch event are threefold: \n\nDetail the scope of the CFA in South Africa\, the expected benefits\, and the opportunities for stakeholder engagement and involvement;\nProvide a high-level overview of the key findings from the climate finance landscape mapping\, including gaps in the climate finance supply chain; and\nDiscuss investment barriers and opportunities in relevant low carbon sectors in South Africa.\n\nPlease click here to register for this Zoom event.

SUMMARY:Developing Decarbonisation Pathways for Industry to Inform a Just Transition in South Africa Aligned to Net Zero by 2050
DESCRIPTION:Partnerships between government and business are crucial to build solutions that meet global\, national\, sectoral and corporate-level climate change commitments. Global industry is critically appraising future options and transformation needs and an increasing number of corporations are proposing their own net zero targets and plans. \nThe NBI and IDDRI are working to support individual businesses and sectors in exploring what deep decarbonisation pathways could look like for heavy emitting industries and value chains in South Africa and globally. As part of our research and engagement\, we are facilitating a South Africa-EU dialogue on long-term industrial pathways in collaboration with business and policymakers. \nThis event is the first in a series of engagements that will form part of the South Africa-EU dialogue on just industrial transitions. The series aims to promote constructive discussions about decarbonisation pathways\, investment opportunities and policy-related enablers for effective transitions from a business perspective. \nThis first dialogue\, to be held on the 19th May\, will begin with a plenary session for the South African and EU policy and decision- makers to frame technical decarbinisation pathways for a Just Transition to a carbon neutral economy and the role industry and international cooperation are expected to play. \nKey speakers include: \n\nMs. Joanne Yawitch\, CEO NBI\nDr. Riina Kionka\, EU Ambassador to the Republic of South Africa\nMs. Nomfundo Tshabalala\, Director-General of the Department of Forestry\, Fisheries and Environment\nDr. Chrispian Olver\, Executive Director Presidential Climate Change Coordination Commission\nMr. Sébastien Treyer\,  Executive Director of IDDRI\n\nWe will then have the opportunity to unpack concrete challenges\, enablers across value chains and emerging opportunities for collaboration between South Africa and the EU\, specifically for steel. We will also  take a deep dive into understanding what examples of South African and European private sector-driven decarbonisation pathways look like for specific industries including chemicals (incl. petrochemicals) and cement as part of a Just Transition. \nEach sector-level breakout session will include the following: \n\nSector decarbonisation pathway in South Africa\nSector decarbonisation pathway in Europe\nSA & EU Business facilitated Q&A session on international value chains and trade\, technology development and cooperation and country-wide visions implication\nFacilitated discussion on bilateral collaboration opportunities\, identification  of opportunities for investment\, foster knowledge/ solution exchange and identify key enabling policy options\n\nThe NBI and IDDRI invite you to participate in this interactive session and knowledge sharing between South African and EU experts.

SUMMARY:COP26 South African Pavilion Roadshow Launch
DESCRIPTION:Demonstrating government and business ambition and credibility\, as well as positioning South Africa as an attractive low-carbon investment destination \nClimate change is one of the biggest threats to our global economy and tackling it is also one of the world’s big economic opportunities. The 26th International Climate Change Conference (COP26)\, to be held in Glasgow\, UK  in November 2021\, will be a pivotal moment for governments and business across the globe to make ambitious commitments to tackle climate change and achieve a Just Transition. The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified calls for a green recovery and building back better. \nIn order to achieve a green recovery and greater economic competitiveness in the future\, South Africa will have to develop not only robust net-zero plans but also position itself as preferred low-carbon and climate resilient investment destination in a manner that balances economic\, social and environmental priorities. \nSouth Africa’s key trade partners have already committed to deep carbon cuts. To access these new markets and capital\, South Africa needs to position itself as a credible market. Backed by an enhanced country level contribution to global climate efforts\, South Africa’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) will enable South Africa to access trade and finance opportunities fundamental to transitioning our economy and maintaining its competitiveness. \nCOP26 is an opportunity for government and business to jointly develop and affirm South Africa’s long-term commitments towards net-zero emissions by 2050 and a climate resilient future\, underpinned by a Just Transition. South Africa’s transition is an opportunity to stimulate an economic recovery that is just: meaning that it reduces inequality\, maintains and strengthens social cohesion\, eradicates poverty\, ensures participation in a new economy for all\, and creates a socio-economic context which is resilient to the physical impacts of climate change. \nThe National Business Initiative (NBI) and the Department of Forestry\, Fisheries\, and Environment (DFFE) take pleasure in inviting NBI members to attend this COP26 South African Pavilion Roadshow Launch that will highlight how the business community can support South Africa’s presence at COP26 and partner to deliver a successful Pavilion that will demonstrate and promote South Africa as a low-carbon and climate resilient trade investment destination.

SUMMARY:Enhancing NDC Ambition and the Importance of Private Sector Participation
DESCRIPTION:The latest science from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) indicates that more urgent and rapid reductions in emissions are required by all countries. A failure to limit emissions to 1.5 degrees leaves us vulnerable to the impacts of severe climate change. Although some real progress has been made\, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has indicated that current individual level contributions are not adequate to prevent dangerous global warming this century. \nCalls are mounting for countries to enhance their climate ambition or Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Climate Agreement\, in the run up to 26th International Climate Change Conference (COP26) to be held in Glasgow\, Scotland\, in November 2021. \nBold and fearless leadership will be essential in ensuring a successful ‘Just Transition’ to a net-zero economy. A ‘Just Transition’ incorporates socio-economic and historic considerations with the principles of equity and inclusiveness. Countries like Indonesia\, for example\, have been able to reduce fossil fuel subsidies allowing for larger portions of the fiscus to go towards their infrastructure and social development. \nThe South African Cabinet has released the country’s revised NDC for public comment. An ambitious NDC for South Africa is necessary for triggering the structural changes and building the trust required to achieve a ‘Just Transition’. In the eyes of the international community it demonstrates our commitment to making a fair share contribution to global climate response measures. Credibility based on an ambitious NDC will enhance our access to investment\, markets and climate finance. If this ambition is shared across geographies\, it will smooth the path for international cooperative approaches\, including between industries. \nThe National Business Initiative (NBI) and IDDRI invite you to join us as we discuss perspectives on\, and approaches toward raising NDC globally and at national level in developing country contexts. We will hear from countries like Indonesia\, India\, Mexico and South Africa and talk about NDC ambition in relation to key elements relevant to developing country contexts such as jobs\, the ‘Just Transition’\, competitiveness and inclusive growth.

SUMMARY:Unpacking the Just Transition in developed and developing country contexts from the perspectives of business and labour
DESCRIPTION:In light of the global climate crisis\, and more recently\, due to the need to rebuild their economies following the devastating impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic\, forward thinking countries are taking the opportunity to transition towards low carbon development pathways. The European Union\, China and the United Kingdom\, to name a few\, have made public commitments to reduce their carbon emissions to net-zero. \nAs some of our major trading partners progress towards net-zero\, we need to set ourselves on a path towards sustainable\, equitable\, resilient\, and economy-wide transitions to ensure we remain globally competitive in the long-term as well as play our part in mitigating the worst impacts of climate change. \nThe ‘Just Transition’ process captures the need to achieve the global goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050\, and limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees\, in a way that is fair and equitable and which leaves no one behind. \nJoin us for an exciting new event hosted by the National Business Initiative (NBI) in partnership with The B Team as we unpack and compare interpretations and understandings of the ‘Just Transition’ in developed and developing country contexts. We will also explore how this may impact business conducted\, with speakers representing business and labour. \nAs part of this discussion we will explore the roles and responsibilities of labour and business and how these differ in developing and developed country contexts as well as issues of inequality and ownership. Overall\, we will seek to highlight shared and differing characteristics of the respective transitions. We will also be looking at examples of best practice by business in these different contexts and talking broadly about the extent to which country contexts influence the structure and nature of future investment opportunities. \nThis engagement aims to develop more nuanced understandings of the ‘Just Transition’ in developing country contexts when compared to that of a developed country. Through dialogue between developed and developing country stakeholders\, we hope to achieve and communicate these understandings to relevant stakeholders in the public\, private and civil society sectors to ultimately ensure greater success in its conception and implementation over time.

SUMMARY:Unlocking Corporate Procurement to Drive South Africa’s Renewable Electricity Transition Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join the National Business Initiative (NBI) in partnership with The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)\, The Climate Group\, CDP and supported by We Mean Business\, to accelerate corporate renewable electricity procurement in South Africa. \nA renewable electricity revolution is underway across the globe. This transition to renewable based electricity is a gamechanger for sustainable growth and global efforts to meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement. \nCompanies in South Africa are the largest consumers of electricity and therefore play a critical role in unlocking the widespread systemic change needed to achieve a carbon-neutral future. To this end\, more than 50 companies with operations in South Africa have embarked on plans to procure 100% renewable power by 2050 or sooner\, through RE100\, led by the Climate Group and CDP\, or the WBCSD’s REscale initiative. \nTo unlock opportunities for corporate renewable procurement\, the NBI\, WBCSD\, The Climate Group\, CDP and We Mean Business coalition will be hosting a multi-stakeholder online workshop on the 29th of March 2021\, to discuss how businesses\, renewable electricity suppliers and municipalities can best realise the opportunities for corporate renewable electricity procurement in South Africa. \nThis Launch will kickstart a broader stream of work aiming to: \n\nUnlock opportunities for local companies committed to reaching net-zero emissions by facilitating discussions with renewable electricity suppliers\, local government\, and cities;\nBring together electricity buyers and producers to understand common challenges; and\nUnderstand how companies can accelerate the renewable electricity transition in South Africa.\n\nRE100 is a global initiative bringing together over 270 of the world’s most influential businesses driving the transition to 100% renewable electricity. WBCSD’s REscale members share the ambition to scale up renewable deployment beyond average growth to achieve 3.5 TW of capacity by 2025.

SUMMARY:Building climate leadership and action in the lead up to UN Climate Change Conference\, COP26 in Glasgow
DESCRIPTION:The British High Commissioner to South Africa\, Nigel Casey MVO\, Chief Executive Officer of the National Business Initiative (NBI)\, Joanne Yawitch and Charles Perry of the COP26 Climate Champions Team are hosting a discussion for NBI Member Companies\, on building climate ambition and private sector leadership in the lead up to COP26. \nThe year 2021 is a pivotal moment in the race to tackle climate change. Countries only have a limited amount of time in which to act if the world is to avoid the worst effects of climate change. \nThe United Kingdom was the first major economy in the world to make a legally binding net zero commitment\, followed by the European Union in March 2020. The Chinese President\, Xi Jinping\, announced that China aimed to go carbon neutral by 2060. Since then\, Japan and South Korea have joined what the UN estimates is now a total of over 110 countries that have set a net zero target by 2050. Together\, these countries represent more than 65% of global emissions and more than 70% of the world economy. \nSouth Africa’s key trade partners are already signing up to deep carbon cuts. To access these new markets and capital\, South Africa needs to position itself as a credible market. In order to be credible South Africa needs to demonstrate similar levels of ambition and demonstrate what needs to be done (and what international support is needed)\, to get there. \nBusiness has a pivotal role to play in transforming economies to to achieve net zero by 2050. The South African business community will need to consolidate efforts across whole sectors and value chains to enable this goal. To enhance business credibility we need to make similarly bold commitments and back them up with clear action. \nThe NBI\, in partnership with Business Unity South Africa (BUSA) and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) is leading work together with the South African business community to develop an ambitious\, fact-based\, and unified business view ahead of COP26 on what a ‘Just Transition’ could look like for South Africa. This work will support sectors and companies to develop long-term low-carbon pathways and identify ways to finance and implement them. \nThe COP26 Summit will bring parties together\, including business\, to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. This is a major opportunity to present South Africa’s long term plan and ambition and therefore position South Africa as a major investment destination.

SUMMARY:Envisioning South Africa’s Just Transition and Climate Pathways - Realising opportunities for the Youth
DESCRIPTION:South Africa’s economy is highly carbon and energy intensive and is also extremely vulnerable to both the transition and physical risks from climate change. We are also an acutely unequal society\, marked by gross levels of economic exclusion. South Africa must achieve a just and inclusive transition to realise economic opportunities and competitiveness\, to enhance social cohesion and to address intergenerational climate impacts and justice for country’s youth in generations to follow. \nMeaningful engagement with South Africa’s youth\, who constitute almost a third of the population\, is crucial for ensuring that climate action is ambitious\, inclusive\, and timely. \nIn recognition of the key role that South Africa’s young people must play in order to achieve a just\, inclusive\, and economically competitive transition\, the NBI and SAIIA (South African Institute of International Affairs) are pleased to host a series of Business-Youth engagements on transition issues and climate pathways for key sectors in South Africa’s economy\, providing a platform for a strong youth voice in guiding this transition. \nAn initial closed roundtable session is proposed with the following objectives: \n\nTo present South African business voices on climate change mitigation advocacy and action\nTo hear and understand youth perspectives on climate change mitigation and their expectations from business\nTo understand how the youth envisions businesses of the future to look like in the context of an achieved Just Transition in South Africa\n\nThis roundtable discussion will take place online on Wednesday\, 17th March 2021\, from 15:00 to 16:30. \nKindly click here to RSVP for this session.

SUMMARY:Unlocking a Just Transition for South Africa - Opportunities for Green Jobs\, Industries and Climate Resilience
DESCRIPTION:The South African economy is highly energy and carbon intensive and also extremely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The country is also an acutely unequal society\, marked by gross levels of unemployment and poverty. South Africa must achieve a Just Transition to avoid exacerbating inequality\, maintain social cohesion\, eradicate poverty and plan for the physical impacts of climate change. \nThe Department of Environment\, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) and the Department of Trade\, Industry and Competition (former Economic Development Department)\, jointly commissioned Trade & Industrial Policy Strategies (TIPS) to undertake a National Employment Vulnerability Assessment (NEVA) to delve into the climate-change related impacts on businesses\, workers and communities in key value chains\, namely: \n\nThe coal value chain\nThe metals value chain\nPetroleum-based transport value chain\nAgriculture value chain\nTourism value chain\n\nComplementary to NEVA is the development of a set of Sector Job Resilience Plans (SJRPs) for the aforementioned value chains. The SJRP assess the opportunities for green jobs and industries; and climate resilience interventions to anchor and drive South Africa’s transition to a low carbon\, climate resilient and inclusive economy and society. \nThe National Business Initiative (NBI) in partnership with  DEFF\, is pleased to invite you to attend an online interactive session\, as a critical next step to the development of  NEVA and SJRPs\, to identify viable and effective programmes that could be implemented from these SJRPs in order to contribute to a Just Transition for South Africa. Core to this session\, is a collaborative engagement on how business can best enable and realise the opportunities presented by a transition to a low carbon and climate resilient economy and; to respond to the economic risks of climate change as a key stakeholder in South Africa’s climate response. The event will concentrate on SJRPs areas that can assist sectors and companies in key value chains to realise the green economy opportunities. \nBusiness leadership is key to a successful transition: one that is just and equitable\, driving economic growth and competitiveness with tangible social benefits. Business-led engagements with Government and civil society on transition issues for key sectors present a real opportunity for a strong business leadership voice in guiding this transition both in response to climate change and other global trends.

SUMMARY:Gauteng Water Alliance 2020 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:As evidenced by the COVID-19 pandemic\, adequate risk preparedness is critical for economic development\, including in the South African water sector. Based on growing urban water demand and delays in water augmentation\, the Gauteng province runs the risk of significant water restrictions in the near future\, including running out of water to meet demand. This risk could be disastrous for the country\, given the critical importance of Gauteng for the national economy. \nThe work of the National Business Initiative (NBI)\, alongside its partners and members in the uMhlathuze Water Stewardship Partnership\, Western Cape Drought Task Force and recent Gauteng COVID-19 Water Response\, demonstrate that effective public-private sector collaboration does make a difference in risk mitigation and crisis aversion. \nPlease join us for the upcoming engagement of the Gauteng Water Alliance\, which will focus on: \n\nUnderstanding the current state and vulnerabilities of the Vaal System\nProviding an update on work undertaken within the Alliance to date\, including in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic\nOutlining the findings of research conducted on industry water risk mitigation in the Province\, as well as additional measures companies would like to implement\nProviding an overview of some of the financing options available for industrial water efficiency\n\nThis meeting of the Alliance will have an industrial and company focus.

SUMMARY:Consultation on the City of Johannesburg’s Climate Action Plan (CAP) with Business Stakeholders and the Alliance for Climate Action South Africa
DESCRIPTION:The City of Johannesburg has committed to a green economy transition as indicated in their growth and development strategy for 2040 and beyond. Outcome 2 in particular states that “The City plans to lead in the establishment of sustainable\, eco-efficient infrastructure solutions and to create a landscape that is liveable\, resilient\, sustainable and supports low carbon initiatives”. The City has made a net zero by 2050 commitment through the C40 Cities Network where it has reinforced its plan to show it will adapt and improve its resilience to climate hazards. With this commitment in place\, the City is in the process of developing their Climate Action Plan and with the support of the Alliance for Climate Action of which C40\, WWF and NBI are partners. \nDeveloping an ambitious CAP is a vital step for cities to respond to the climate crisis and engage with stakeholders in making informed decisions. It does this through enabling cities to identify and respond to socio-economic challenges while managing their climate risks such as GHG emissions and addressing their adaptation needs. \nThe City has engaged internally with other city stakeholders as well as stakeholders from civil society and is now ready to share their CAP priority actions with business for further feedback. Please join us for a workshop with the City of Joburg\, convened by the Alliance for Climate Action\, where the City will share the preliminary CAP with business stakeholders and start exploring opportunities for collaboration for implementation of the plan. The online workshop will take place on Wednesday 11 November 14:00 – 16:00 via MS Teams. This work is a collective initiative of the Alliance for Climate Action (C40\, NBI and WWF) to assist in connecting cities and businesses to find opportunities with CAP implementation. \nKindly click Accept should you wish to attend this session.

SUMMARY:Unlocking Private Sector Involvement in the Green Climate Fund Projects in South Africa – Phase 2 Launch
DESCRIPTION:The National Business Initiative (NBI) and the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) are hosting the Phase 2 Launch of Unlocking Private Sector Involvement in the Green Climate Fund Projects in South Africa.   \nThis NBI-SANBI collaboration is designed to help identify areas of vulnerability\, areas where our companies are working on adaptation projects already and where\, through collaboration\, we can scale up these projects to enhance impact and to attract climate finance; providing an opportunity for the private sector to define the role that business can play in South Africa’s GCF projects. \nPhase 2 of this SANBI-NBI partnership aims to identify specific projects that can contribute towards a national pipeline of adaptation\, biodiversity and ecosystem-based adaptation actions to alleviate the acute shortage of adaption projects locally; and to attract up to US$50 million from the Green Climate Fund (GCF). \nPhase 1 convened business in a series of rich capacity building sessions covering the latest information on a range of biodiversity\, climate resilience\, adaptation finance and ecosystem-based adaptation topics. A recording of each of the four capacity building events is available on the NBI’s YouTube channel and can be accessed here. Phase 3 will shortlist to a few high promise projects with which we can approach the GCF.

SUMMARY:NBI Online Event: ACA SA - Innovative collaborations to drive our climate-smart economic recovery
DESCRIPTION:Countries globally are facing the unprecedented challenge of stimulating their economies in the short-and medium-term in response to COVID-19. For a robust economic recovery\, it is crucial that they ensure their economies are competitive and sustainable in the long-term. This event aims to build the capacity of city representatives as well as private sector stakeholders to engage on what a post-COVID green economic recovery could look like for South Africa and to share insight into what different stakeholders are doing in the space. \nAn increased ratio of debt to GDP along with a stagnant economy and the impact of COVID-19 have exacerbated socio-economic challenges of inequality\, poverty\, and unemployment in South Africa. This leaves South African business\, communities and municipalities struggling. To secure finance for immediate relief stimulus and long-term investment at an affordable price\, South Africa must demonstrate that we are working to address various forms of climate risk\, such as physical and transition risk. We are poised at a unique moment for South Africa to attract investment and financial relief packages that can stimulate a just transition towards a net zero carbon\, socially equal\, climate-resilient\, thriving and sustainable economy. \nWe invite you to join the Alliances for Climate Action South Africa (a partnership Initiative convened by C40\, NBI and WWF)\, as well as the South African Local Government Association (SALGA)\, to unpack: \n\nWhy a post-COVID economic recovery plan for the country needs to be climate smart to ensure South Africa’s long-term economic wellbeing.\nHow local governments are thinking about post-COVID economic stimulus.\nThe work cities are doing to update their Climate Action Plans aligned to net zero emissions targets by 2050.\nHow the private sector can collaborate at sector level and with local government\, through the Alliances for Climate Action South Africa (ACA SA)\, to unlock low-carbon and climate-resilient opportunities for collaboration and investment.\n\nCity and business participants in the ACA SA are standing up for a net carbon neutral economy by 2050\, taking their own action to get there\, and collaborating to do more than they could alone\, in order to unlock opportunities to transition our economy. This is one of several Alliances in countries around the world www.alliancesforclimateaction.org.

SUMMARY:NBI’s SDGs Online Roadshow 2020
DESCRIPTION:The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a global framework for sustainable development that call for business involvement in their implementation at global\, national and local scales. \nThe current COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the deep interdependencies between business and economic sustainability as well as social and environmental wellbeing. The SDGs are specifically formulated to provide a guideline for how to build\, transition and maintain businesses and economies that promote social equality and wellbeing as well as environmental resilience and regeneration. Had the global community progressed further in SDG implementation\, COVID-19 would not have resulted in the far reaching and devastating social and economic impacts\, that have occurred to date. \nTwo years ago\, the National Business Initiative (NBI)\, in partnership with the Danish Industry (DI)\, held an SDGs roadshow with business stakeholders in Johannesburg\, Cape Town and Durban\, sharing knowledge and tools to encourage South African companies to incorporate the SDGs into core business. Much has changed since then. The COVID pandemic and the ensuing economic crisis each represent a unique opportunity for business to reflect on the benefits of using the SDGs as a robust framework to analyse risk and opportunity\, thereby informing a roadmap for building durable businesses and a resilient society and environment. \nThis year\, the NBI will again team up with DI to hold the SDGs Roadshow 2020 online. This event will take place over 2 engaging online sessions\, spread over two days. Each session will be 3 hours long and the overall roadshow aims to build the capacity of participants in order to: \n\nUnderstand why the SDGs are important in the creation of resilient\, thriving\, and sustainable societies and economies\nUnderstand the business case for mainstreaming the implementation of the SDGs into your business\nUse a selection of tools developed\, piloted and proven by both DI and the NBI to integrate the SDGs into your core business\n\nJoin us online on the 6th and 7th of August for two engaging sessions designed to help you take your company’s SDGs process to the next level\, with key insights provided from experts in the field and case studies presented by other leading companies\, who have made significant progress. \nWe recommend that attendees join both sessions for maximum benefit. Our events team will share calendar invitations for both days to all those who RSVP by clicking the “accept” button below. Attendees will then be free to accept both the calendar invites (one for each session) or to choose whether to join one of the sessions only. \nAccept SDGs Online Roadshow.

SUMMARY:Online Launch of the NBI Just Transitions Pathways Project
DESCRIPTION:Countries globally are facing the unprecedented challenge of stimulating their economies in the short and medium-term in response to COVID-19 and climate change in the long-term. Climate change and its impacts\, is a significant threat to South Africa’s economy. It is crucial that we ensure our economy is competitive and sustainable in the long-term. This is especially true for South Africa where it is possible that a key element of any post COVID-19 economic stimulus is green stimulus. Increasingly finance conditionalities require addressing climate risk and economic transition. \nIt is essential that the South African business community can lead in directing how we should transition our economy to one that\, in 2050\, is low-carbon and competitive. This requires us making critical decisions now. \nThe National Business Initiative (NBI)\, in partnership with Business Unity South Africa (BUSA) and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) is leading work that will support sectors and companies to develop long-term low-carbon pathways and identify ways to finance and implement them. \nThe project has 2 key objectives: \n\nExpediting a Green Stimulus strategy as part of South Africa’s COVID-19 response; and\nDeveloping an ambitious\, fact-based\, and unified business view ahead of COP26 on what a ‘Just Transition’ could look like for South Africa.\n\nPlease join leading South African CEOs including Andre de Ruyter of Eskom\, Fleetwood Grobler of Sasol\, Cas Coovadia of BUSA and Joanne Yawitch of the NBI as we launch the NBI Just Transition Pathways project. We will provide detail on our project and explain opportunities for you and your CEOs to get involved.

SUMMARY:NBI Online Event: Green Recovery: Stimulating Post-COVID Economic Competitiveness in South Africa
DESCRIPTION:South Africa is severely exposed to climate risk\, which in turn amplifies the effects of other environmental and social challenges\, including the current COVID-19 pandemic. As a result\, we need to embrace and carefully consider transitioning our economy to one that is green\, low-carbon\, socially inclusive\, and more resilient. Doing so will bring its own challenges in terms of ensuring a just transition for all sectors of society. We also face the immediate need of rebuilding the economy post this current COVID-19 pandemic. South Africa’s GDP is expected to contract at least by 4% to 10%\, with up to 1 million jobs and 1600 businesses at risk. Rather than adding to Government’s burden\, green and sustainable finance offer a way to address South Africa’s social and economic priorities and to create new investment opportunities\, attracting local as well as international capital. The time is right to unlock alternative forms of funding and channel these to sustainable projects and sectors that build South Africa’s long-term competitiveness and resilience. \nGreen Stimulus is the key to fast-tracking job creation\, improving liquidity\, and to putting South Africa on a path to economic recovery without compromising long-term competitiveness. \nIt provides four strategic advantages to South Africa: \n\nAccess to more funding | Up to $83bn additional funding available\nAccess to cheaper funding | On average up to 18bps cheaper bonds\nPositive job impact | Up to 500k direct jobs unlocked in green investments\nEconomic prosperity in the long term | Mitigates up to R1.8Tr in transition risks and enhancing competitiveness\n\nLeading nations and lending institutions are already voicing the importance and benefits of a ‘Green Recovery’ – multiple countries have indicated that stimulus packages will be ‘Green’ stimulus packages. If South Africa does not invest in a similar way\, we risk trade pressure\, limited access to ODA and entrenching structural challenges in our economy\, threatening long-term competitiveness. \nThe primary challenge is defining what projects and sectors qualify as green\, sustainable\, and inclusive. Internationally\, a number of leading initiatives have paved the way\, including the European Union Taxonomy on Sustainable Activities\, the Climate Bonds Taxonomy\, the International Capital Markets Association Green Project Mapping\, and the Joint MDB (multilateral development banks) Methodology for Climate Finance Tracking. These offer a sound starting point for South Africa to develop its own Green Taxonomy that both supports policy development and asset level investment. Under the leadership of National Treasury\, and with support from IFC (part of the World Bank Group)\, the National Business Initiative (NBI) and the Carbon Trust are working to develop such a taxonomy\, building on complementary initiatives and expertise in the South African market. \nJoin expert speakers from National Treasury\, IFC/World Bank\, the Climate Bonds Initiative and local financial sector practitioners\, to discuss the opportunities and priorities for a green stimulus response to COVID-19\, and help inform the development of a South African Green Finance Taxonomy. \nRSVP here.

SUMMARY:Online Event: Core indicators for implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
DESCRIPTION:Leading companies around the world have taken steps to prioritise the SDGs and incorporate them into their core businesses. The PWC SDGs Challenge 2019 shows that 77% of responding South African companies mention the SDGs in their reporting in one form or another. The challenge is that while there are guidelines on how companies should report on the SDGs\, each company tends to develop their own approach based on the data they have available. \nSouth Africa\, along with other UN member states\, is encouraged to regularly submit their Voluntary National Review on the country’s progress and contribution towards the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Unfortunately\, the lack of SDG reporting standardisation in the private sector poses a significant challenge to any organisation’s attempts at compiling and disclosing company data to report in a consistent and comparable manner – until now. \nTo address this challenge\, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has developed SDG indicators that were identified based on key reporting principles\, selection criteria\, main reporting frameworks and company reporting practices around the world. These core indicators are intended as a common benchmark for sustainability and SDG reporting by enterprises\, and therefore\, represent the minimum disclosures that companies could do to be able to provide comparable baseline data on their contribution to the implementation of the SDGs. \nThe objective of this guidance is to provide practical information on how these indicators could be measured in a consistent manner and in alignment with countries’ needs on monitoring the attainment of the SDG agenda. \nIt is intended to serve as a tool to assist governments to assess private sector contribution to SDG implementation and to assist entities to provide baseline data on sustainability issues. \nYou are most welcome to join the NBI and the UNCTAD webinar if you are interested to learn more about the core indicators proposed by this guidance document and discover insights into how they align with what South African companies already report on. In addition\, we will cover how standardised data from the private sector can benefit national level reporting of the private sector contribution towards the implementation of the SDGs.   \nRSVP here.

SUMMARY:Building leadership and momentum around climate action in the lead up to the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties - November 2020 (COP26)
DESCRIPTION:2020 is a pivotal moment in the race to tackle climate change.  We are running out of time to make the global and local economic changes that will avert the worst physical climate impacts\, impacts that will be catastrophic for South Africa.  Given slow progress at COP25 in Madrid\, the leadership\, plans and activities of the British Government as the COP26 host\, will be critical.  It is important for us as National Business Initiative (NBI) members to understand their processes and seek to provide South African and developing country perspectives.  \nThe United Kingdom Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative for Climate Change\, Nick Bridge and Chief Executive Officer of the National Business Initiative\, Joanne Yawitch therefore have the pleasure of inviting you to attend a discussion on building climate ambition and private sector leadership in the lead up to COP26.  This will give you both the opportunity to understand the United Kingdom thinking and an opportunity to share your perspectives on change.  COP26 is to be held in Glasgow\, Scotland in November 2020. \nThe session will include a presentation from the United Kingdom Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative for Climate Change\, covering climate risks\, climate imperatives and the UK approach to COP 26\, a presentation and reflections on South Africa’s climate transition\, discussions and a light lunch. \nPlease contact Reitumetse Molotsoane for further details on this engagement.

SUMMARY:Inaugural Meeting of NBI's Gauteng Water Alliance
DESCRIPTION:The time for drought related planning for the Gauteng region\, is now. \nDelays in infrastructure development\, operational challenges\, recurrent droughts\, climate change and rising water demand\, all place Gauteng’s water security at risk. As highlighted in a recent report commissioned by the Gauteng Province\, ‘Gauteng must never take its water security for granted.’ \nThe Gauteng Water Alliance will focus on the following: \n\nProviding a strong\, coherent private sector response to the risks facing the Vaal System; and\nSupporting all spheres of government and key players such as Rand Water in the implementation of their programmes\, to strengthen Gauteng’s water resilience.\n\nAs was made abundantly clear in Cape Town recently\, water is everyone’s business. \nEffective private sector collaboration can make a difference\, as evidenced by the work of the National Business Initiative (NBI) and its members in both Richards Bay (through the uMhlathuze Water Stewardship Partnership) and in Cape Town (through the NBI Western Cape Drought Task Force). \nPlease join us as we work to understand the water risks facing Gauteng\, what plans and initiatives are underway; and map out the role of the private sector in the year ahead. \nKindly RSVP here.
