SUMMARY:Launch of WBCSD’s Vision 2050: Time to Transform
DESCRIPTION:The National Business Initiative (NBI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) are hosting the South African launch of Vision 2050: Time to Transform. We’ll be asking how business can lead the transformations needed for 9+ billion people to live well\, within planetary boundaries by 2050. \nThe world faces three critical challenges: the climate emergency\, nature loss and mounting inequality. Only collaboration at unprecedented levels between business\, government and civil society\, will create the impact and scale required to transform our systems to achieve our goal by 2050. WBCSD has not only imagined that future\, they have been putting proactive steps in place to make this vision a reality. \nVision 2050: Time to Transform provides a framework to guide business action in line with the urgency of these challenges. As the local implementation partner of the WBCSD\, NBI has participated in the co-creation of this vision. We want to see sustainable societies around the world and a South Africa that is thriving and inclusive economically\, environmentally and socially. Vision 2050 can contribute to our thinking and help accelerate our members efforts towards achieving this transformation. \nJoin us on Thursday 15 July for the South African launch of WBCSD’s Vision 2050 update to find out more about this comprehensive framework for business action. We will discuss the nine transformation pathways and provide new perspectives on the mindset shifts required for real transformation. \nKeryn James\, Group Chief Executive Officer of ERM and Vice-Chair of WBCSD’s Executive Committee\, will provide a keynote speech exploring how Vision 2050 guides companies on their transformation journeys to 2050. \nThe event will include company representatives from a range of key economic sectors as well as the following speakers: \n\nKeryn James (Keynote Speaker): Group CEO\, ERM and Vice-Chair\, WBCSD Executive Committee\nJoanne Yawitch: CEO\, NBI\nFilippo Veglio: Managing Director & Senior Management Team\, WBCSD\n\nTogether with the WBCSD\, we aim to journey on this transformation trajectory with business to 2050. Will you join us?

SUMMARY:Business Leadership for a Sustainable Future: WBCSD Vision 2050 Refresh Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The National Business Initiative (NBI)\, as the local network partner of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)\, is excited to invite you to attend an update from the WBCSD on the refresh of Vision 2050.  \nVision 2050 was a landmark report issued a decade ago\, focused on opportunities for business to help unlock the transformations required to allow over 9 billion people to live well\, within the boundaries of the planet\, by mid-century. Vision 2050 is a blueprint of the unprecedented opportunities available to businesses who understand that we can no longer operate in business-as-usual mode. \nThe core principles of Vision 2050 are the key attributes of successful business planning\, which include understanding the current situation\, identifying the obstacles to success\, and creating pathways to overcome those obstacles. These key tenets are more necessary than ever under the current operating context of COVID-19. \nAt the beginning of 2020\, with over three dozen leading companies\, the WBCSD launched a collective\, business-led effort to revisit its Vision 2050. The NBI and member companies participated in a key engagement workshop as part of a global roadshow across key geographies including: Africa; Australia; Brazil; China; Europe; India; Japan; Latin America; North America and Southeast Asia. This process was completed by October 2020. \nThe key findings from this first phase include the necessary social\, economic and political shifts required to build back better as we recover from COVID-19\, including the new critical elements that have emerged over the past months with the pandemic changing the way we live and work. Importantly\, these developments help us to understand and shape the necessary systems transformations and also establish what the role of business needs to be. \nThe NBI would like to invite you to a feed-back session with the WBCSD to understand the key trends that will most likely shape the business operating environment over the next decade. Participants will also be given insights into the positive\, opportunity-based\, action agenda needed for the decade to come\, in support of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

SUMMARY:NBI Membership Council Meeting October 2020
DESCRIPTION:After a year unlike any other\, it is with pleasure that we invite you to a meeting of the NBI Membership Council for key insights into what the 2021 NBI Strategy has in store for you as our members. We are excited to use this opportunity to share with you how the NBI 2021 Strategy (adopted by the Board on 30th of June 2020) has been developed and aligned to meet the requirements of our current context. The NBI strategy considers the COVID-19 operating context\, the responses required to drive innovative economic recovery and the courageous steps needed to address the deep structural weaknesses and inequalities that pervade our society. As always\, these solutions showcase the appropriate leadership role for the NBI and our members. \nTo launch our meeting\, Mr Andile Sangqu (Executive in Residence at GIBS) will be providing a dose of inspiration as our thought leader – giving key insights into the role of business and why bold and courageous leadership is necessary to steer us through the current crisis. \nOur Chairperson\, Cas Coovadia will lead the programme and encourage engagement and feedback from you\, our valued NBI members\, on both the NBI Strategy and your thoughts on the pivotal role of business in society. \nKindly contact Jo-Anne Stanford should you wish to attend this meeting. \n

SUMMARY:NBI/Brand South Africa: An Investor’s Perspective on South Africa’s Investment Context
DESCRIPTION:The events of 2018 cemented the year as one of reckoning both locally and globally. Geopolitical and global dynamics continued to point towards increasing global uncertainty as a result of brewing trade wars\, Brexit\, increased trade protectionism and challenges to global free trade. These trends of uncertainty\, self-interest and greed played out locally in the form of the insidious elements of state capture and corporate fraud. \nIf the previous year was for reckoning\, 2019 is predicted to be one of reflection as various institutions galvanise support for scaled up efforts to move the economy forward. It is in this spirit that the National Business Initiative (NBI) and Brand South Africa invite you to a jointly-hosted event to consider in depth South Africa’s investment projections given the current state of the country. \nPlease join us for this engagement as we explore and take stock of the economy through the eyes of the investor and to gather information on the on-the-ground experiences of doing business in South Africa. Brand South Africa will share findings from its International Investor Perceptions Research and the implications thereof for the South African business community. SUMMARY:Lunch with Cas Coovadia – Making Land\, Rand and Sense of South Africa (KZN)
DESCRIPTION:An invitation to an intimate reflection on recent developments in the country over lunch with Cas Coovadia (Chairman\, The Banking Association of South Africa)\, Xolani Magojo (Chairperson\, NBI KZN Regional Advisory Committee) and Joanne Yawitch (CEO:  The National Business Initiative). \nWe invite you to join us to reflect on recent developments in the country and make sense of what these mean for business in the short to medium-term.  The 1H2018 started off under a romantic haze of nostalgia following leadership change within the ruling party. \nBe that as it may\, challenges facing the country abound:  inequality\, unemployment and poverty levels remain stubbornly high.  We are also not addressing\, in a way that produces results\, the low levels of investment and economic growth\, which are critical to addressing inequality\, poverty and unemployment.  The fresh attack on emerging market currencies including the Rand\, imminent legislative changes on land ownership and the approaching national elections continue to collectively nurture uncomfortable levels of market insecurity. \nIn spite of the outlook\, the NBI stands firm in the belief that business has a strong and meaningful role to play in successfully steering and influencing the country through choppy waters.  Join Cas\, Xolani and Joanne and a select group of KwaZulu-Natal business people for an intimate and stimulating discussion on emergent political and economic trends\, and what these mean for business in the region. \n Please note that this is a by invitation only event.

SUMMARY:Thought Leadership Series: The 4th Industrial Revolution and The Future of Work in SA
DESCRIPTION:The National Business Initiative (NBI) and Adcorp\, hosted by Barloworld Limited are holding the second thought leadership series that has begun to explore the 4th Industrial Revolution from the perspective of what it might mean for our economy and how we can engage with it to create new opportunities and jobs that support the vision of the National Development Plan (NDP) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This follows the first dialogue session at which subject matter experts shared their views of the trends which are foreshadowed to impact the new world of work. \nThe focus of this second dialogue\, will reflect on the nature of work and the debate around what constitutes decent work both in South Africa and worldwide and opportunities for South Africa within the 4th Industrial Revolution\, drawing on work done by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the International Organisation of Employers (IOE)\, which is the employer representative body at the ILO. The timing of this dialogue is particularly relevant given the fact that President Ramaphosa is now the co-chair of the ILO Global Commission on the Future of Work. It further reinforces the relevance of this topic and the possibility of an NBI collective action work stream\, through membership engagement\, evolving out of the dialogue series. \nWe are therefore delighted and honoured to confirm Dr Joni Musabayana\, ILO\, Director\, Decent Work Team for Eastern and Southern Africa Country Office for Botswana\, Lesotho\, South Africa and Swaziland and Mthunzi Mdwaba\, IOE VP to the ILO\, Vice Chairman of the ILO and Commissioner of the Global Commission on the Future of Work\, as keynote inputs at this event. \nPlease click here to RSVP. \nPresentations: \nThe 4th Industrial Revolution Future of Work in South \nBy Dr Joni Musabayan \nThe 4th Industrial Revolution Future of Work in South \nBy Mr Mthunzi Mdwaba
