SUMMARY:Webinar: Gender Based Violence (GBV) and the Private Sector
DESCRIPTION:The current context of a global COVID-19 pandemic casts a specific lens on what was already a key issue in our society – and renders the issue of Gender Based Violence (GBV) much more urgent. In a time where business is challenged to look beyond profit as to how it can support broader society through this crisis\, it should be borne in mind what business is doing with regards to GBV; particularly when it relates to their work force who will mostly be home-based for the foreseeable future. Join Shared Value Africa Initiative and the National Business Initiative (NBI) in a virtual roundtable discussion on gender-based violence and how business and society can collaborate to challenge\, capacitate\, and co-create solutions towards eradicating GBV. Please note that this webinar will also be held on Wednesday\, 27 and Friday 29 May 2020 at 14:00. \nGender Based Violence & The Private Sector Resource Document \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:NBI TLS: The Ethical Leadership We Need Requires the Private Sector to Introspect and Act
DESCRIPTION:One of South Africa’s biggest and most complex challenges is corruption. The real cost of corruption is not just financial loss and reputational damage\, but also includes the loss of jobs that would have otherwise been created\, the loss of tax income due to illegal cash outflows\, the negative impact on socio-economic growth\, the loss to citizens that are forced to pay more for goods and services; and corruption stunts competitiveness and dynamism in the country. \nRecent studies in SA show the following examples of the social and economic impact of corruption: \n\nThe cost to the South African GDP is at least R27 billion per annum;\nLoss of roughly R30 billion of state budget;\nLoss of 76 000 jobs;\nIllegal outflow of R185bn from 1994 to 2008; and\nInflated prices for infrastructure – 15 companies agreed to penalties totalling R1\,46 billion for collusion.\n\nThis is clearly a problem that is pervasive and needs to be urgently addressed. Our current safeguards are lacking\, and more action must be taken to tackle the root causes and find effective solutions. Fundamental to this is action by the private sector. \nThe purpose of this TLS is to provide some insights into how the private sector is driving anti-corruption efforts and enabling ethical leadership; and to explore what more needs to be done to turn the tide. \nSpeakers: \n\nGugu McLaren-Ushewokunze: Head of Social Transformation\, NBI\nDavid Lewis: Executive Director\, Corruption Watch\nGideon Pogrund: Director\, GIBS Ethics and Governance Think Tank\nMildred Nkopane: Chief Director\, Gauteng Ethics Advisory Council\n\nKindly RSVP here.
