SUMMARY:Thought Leadership Series: South Africa’s Draft Integrated Resource Plan 2018
DESCRIPTION:The draft Integrated Resource Plan 2018 (IRP) was released for public comment on the 27th of August 2018. Stakeholders are invited to submit written comments within 60 days of release. The draft IRP maps out how Government intends to manage electricity demand up until 2030. Companies spend a significant portion on electricity each year\, and this is an opportunity to engage on the energy mix of the South African electricity sector\, instead of considering electricity as merely a cost to be managed. It is extremely positive that Government is willing to engage with the public for input on the IRP. The National Business Initiative (NBI) would like to enable a broader capacity amongst business to engage in political processes on the energy transition and to do this\, we will be hosting an IRP event for NBI Member Companies. RSVP by clicking here.

SUMMARY:Strengthening the Capacity of TVET Colleges to Deliver Green Skills: Enabling Youth Transitions into the Green Economy
DESCRIPTION:The South African Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges have the potential to deliver at scale\, innovative programmes that respond to industry needs. In the past few years\, the National Business Initiative (NBI) and its partners: Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator\, Central Johannesburg College\, the Nedbank Foundation’s Eyethu Community Trust and the Institute of Plumbing South Africa\, have invested resources and expertise to inform the development of a TVET college intervention for Green Skills underpinned by quality\, responsiveness to industry demand and enhancing youth employability. The NBI together with its partners are hosting to a Thought Leadership Session (TLS) which will include a panel\, comprising representatives from: TVET colleges\, companies\, an industry body and candidates who took part in the project\, who will share their reflections at this TLS. Please RSVP here should you wish to attend this session.

SUMMARY:Lunch with Cas Coovadia – Making Land\, Rand and Sense of South Africa (KZN)
DESCRIPTION:An invitation to an intimate reflection on recent developments in the country over lunch with Cas Coovadia (Chairman\, The Banking Association of South Africa)\, Xolani Magojo (Chairperson\, NBI KZN Regional Advisory Committee) and Joanne Yawitch (CEO:  The National Business Initiative). \nWe invite you to join us to reflect on recent developments in the country and make sense of what these mean for business in the short to medium-term.  The 1H2018 started off under a romantic haze of nostalgia following leadership change within the ruling party. \nBe that as it may\, challenges facing the country abound:  inequality\, unemployment and poverty levels remain stubbornly high.  We are also not addressing\, in a way that produces results\, the low levels of investment and economic growth\, which are critical to addressing inequality\, poverty and unemployment.  The fresh attack on emerging market currencies including the Rand\, imminent legislative changes on land ownership and the approaching national elections continue to collectively nurture uncomfortable levels of market insecurity. \nIn spite of the outlook\, the NBI stands firm in the belief that business has a strong and meaningful role to play in successfully steering and influencing the country through choppy waters.  Join Cas\, Xolani and Joanne and a select group of KwaZulu-Natal business people for an intimate and stimulating discussion on emergent political and economic trends\, and what these mean for business in the region. \n Please note that this is a by invitation only event.

Over the past few months the National Business Initiative (NBI) and its members have collaboratively worked towards creating a vision for an equal and just South Africa via a number of national workshops. SUMMARY:Information session on the requirements for the implementation of the Youth Employment Service and implications for companies
DESCRIPTION:South Africa’s unemployment rate is among the highest in the world at 26.7% in the first quarter of 2018\, with the unemployment rate among youth (15 to 34) at 38\,2% (Quarterly Labour Force Survey\, Q1:2018). \nPresident Cyril Ramaphosa launched the Youth Employment Service (YES) on 27th March 2018 as a joint effort between business\, government and labour aimed at placing unemployed black youth aged 18 to 29 in companies for twelve months to gain access to work-readiness training and work experience. By creating job opportunities and delivering training for youth\, YES seeks to contribute towards achieving social and economic transformation. \nThe incentive package for companies hosting the YES candidates includes government’s Employment Tax Incentive and Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) recognition. On 29th March 2018\, the Department of Trade and Industry published for public comment a Gazette (Vol. 633\, No. 41546) to amend the Draft Statement 000\, Code Series 000 of 2018 in terms of section 9 (5) of the B-BBEE Amendment Act 2003\, (Act No.53 of 2003) as amended by the B-BBEE Act of 2013. Whilst we await the outcome of public comments on the Gazette\, it is important nonetheless for National Business Initiative (NBI) member companies to recognise the implications of the proposed amendements in relation to YES. \nThe NBI cordially invites you to attend an information session which will include inputs on: \n\nThe requirements\, processes and protocols for companies wanting to participate in the YES initiative and the implications thereof.\nThe proposed amendments to the B-BBEE codes with respect to the introduction of YES and the implications for companies wanting to host the YES candidates.\n\nRSVP by clicking here.

SUMMARY:Thought Leadership Series: The 4th Industrial Revolution and The Future of Work in SA
DESCRIPTION:The National Business Initiative (NBI) and Adcorp\, hosted by Barloworld Limited are holding the second thought leadership series that has begun to explore the 4th Industrial Revolution from the perspective of what it might mean for our economy and how we can engage with it to create new opportunities and jobs that support the vision of the National Development Plan (NDP) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This follows the first dialogue session at which subject matter experts shared their views of the trends which are foreshadowed to impact the new world of work. \nThe focus of this second dialogue\, will reflect on the nature of work and the debate around what constitutes decent work both in South Africa and worldwide and opportunities for South Africa within the 4th Industrial Revolution\, drawing on work done by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the International Organisation of Employers (IOE)\, which is the employer representative body at the ILO. The timing of this dialogue is particularly relevant given the fact that President Ramaphosa is now the co-chair of the ILO Global Commission on the Future of Work. It further reinforces the relevance of this topic and the possibility of an NBI collective action work stream\, through membership engagement\, evolving out of the dialogue series. \nWe are therefore delighted and honoured to confirm Dr Joni Musabayana\, ILO\, Director\, Decent Work Team for Eastern and Southern Africa Country Office for Botswana\, Lesotho\, South Africa and Swaziland and Mthunzi Mdwaba\, IOE VP to the ILO\, Vice Chairman of the ILO and Commissioner of the Global Commission on the Future of Work\, as keynote inputs at this event. \nPlease click here to RSVP. \nPresentations: \nThe 4th Industrial Revolution Future of Work in South \nBy Dr Joni Musabayan \nThe 4th Industrial Revolution Future of Work in South \nBy Mr Mthunzi Mdwaba

SUMMARY:Thought Leadership Series: Internal Carbon Price
DESCRIPTION:A growing group of forward-looking companies are using an internal carbon price to help manage climate risk and align themselves with the low-carbon transition. \nInternal carbon pricing can not only help companies effectively combat climate change and meet bold emissions reduction targets\, but can also encourage innovation\, drive down costs and help ensure sustained economic competitiveness. \nLeading businesses recognise this and are building a carbon price into their operations and investment decisions\, as an effective way to future-proof profitability and help shape the evolving regulatory framework. \nThe National Business Initiative (NBI) is partnering with the global collation We Mean Business (WMB) to help enhance ambition in the response to climate change. One of the key action items under the We Mean Business commitments\, that we focus on\, is carbon pricing.  This commitment requires companies to: \n\nSet an internal carbon price high enough to materially affect investment decisions to drive down greenhouse gas emissions; and benchmark against peers;\nPublicly advocate the importance of carbon pricing through policy mechanisms that take into account country specific economies and policy contexts; and the Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition (CPLC); and\nCommunicate on progress over time on the two criteria above in public corporate reports.\n\nPlease join us for a TLS “working session” where we interactively unpack the practicalities of fulfilling these requirements\, in particular how one would set and use an internal price. \nSpeakers: \n\nDave Collins: Executive\, MAC Consulting\n\n\nMandy Rambharos: Climate Change and Sustainable Development Manager\, Eskom\n\n\nShamini Harrington: Principal SHE Policy and Sustainability Advisor\, Sasol\n\n\nSteve Nicholls: Head: Environmental Sustainability\, NBI\n\n  \n\n\n\nIf you are an NBI Member company and would like to attend this TLS please RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Thought Leadership Series: The Task Force on Climate Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD)
DESCRIPTION:Published in June 2017\, the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) have attracted significant local and international interest\, with their recommendations incorporated into key disclosure platforms such as CDP. \nThe Task Force’s recommendations represent an important step in enabling market forces to support a smooth transition to a low-carbon economy\, by identifying the information needed to appropriately assess and price climate-related risks and opportunities. These recommended disclosures should be included in Corporates’ financial reports and the recommendations include practical and illustrative methods on how to do so. \nThe Task Force further recommends addressing future climate-related risks through a forward-looking scenario development process\, undertaken at company level. This process includes formulating a business scenario that is based on an emissions trajectory that gives the highest likelihood of limiting the average global temperature increase to 2⁰ C. \nIf you are an NBI Member company\, please join us for a TLS “working session” where we interactively unpack the TCFD and its implications for companies in South Africa\, as well as consider the ways in which the TCFD recommendations relate to key disclosure platforms and sustainability metrics. \nPlease click here if you wish to ACCEPT this TLS.

SUMMARY:Kopano ya Metsi’s Municipal Water Infrastructure Investment Dialogue
DESCRIPTION: Municipalities are the service delivery arm of government. Theirs in an important mandate upon which hinges key areas of South Africa’s social and economic development. At present\, most municipalities face immense challenges relating to the development and maintenance of water and sanitation infrastructure. It is therefore key to understand the challenges municipalities face\, what infrastructure projects they are prioritising and how best to strengthen their water business for social and economic prosperity. \nThe National Business Initiative (NBI)\, in partnership with SALGA\, are hosting to a unique dialogue being held in collaboration with two South African municipalities. The dialogue will serve as a pilot and will bring together two municipalities with a panel of experts to consider each municipality’s specific challenges and water infrastructure needs\, and how these needs might be addressed. The panel will be composed of public and private experts with varying expertise. \nThe roundtable will focus on: \n\nThe current state of each municipality’s water and sanitation business: this includes challenges experienced in water financing and investment and the day to day running of a water service authority (WSA)\,\nThe envisaged water and sanitation project pipeline at the two municipalities\,\nFeedback and recommendations from the expert panel on possible methods and approaches\,\nPotential areas for collaboration; and\nNetworking and relationship building.\n\nPlease click here if you wish to ATTEND this dialogue.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Creating a Vision of an Equal and Just South Africa
DESCRIPTION:Via two in-depth workshops we aim to collectively explore and re-think a future where all people have access to the economy\, and equality in society. \nThe NBI’s Transformation Programme explores how we can find effective ways to contribute towards creating an equal and just South African society within and outside of the workplace. The programme engages with both the role of business in addressing our core socio-economic challenges of inequality\, poverty and unemployment and will also address key internal transformation issues in corporates\, including inter alia issues of equity in relation to race\, gender\, age and leadership. \nThis process allows business to pause and reflect on the journey of transformation\, and to understand both successes to date as well as the barriers to meaningful change. It is an opportunity to reenergise ourselves and galvanise towards collective and collaborative action. \nThe NBI’s vision is a South African business community contributing actively to social and economic transformation by creating jobs and economic opportunities and that identifies and addresses internal and external transformation challenges in order to ensure equity within the workplace and an organisational culture appropriate to this; as well as addressing the relationship between business and the rest of society in order to achieve increased equity. \nIf you an NBI member company we would value your input and experience in this important and timely recommitment to changing South African. \nPlease click here if you wish to attend the workshop:  ACCEPT.

SUMMARY:Enhancing Business Resilience through Context-Based Strategy and Partnerships
DESCRIPTION:The National Business Initiative (NBI) and Network for Business Sustainability (NBS-SA) are hosting a morning workshop to discuss how we ensure that companies and communities are resilient in the face of increasingly frequent and severe disruptions\, such as the Western Cape drought? We will focus on two key dimensions: how companies are contextualising their strategy to enhance resilience and how they are partnering with municipalities and others to enhance the resilience of their companies and the communities in which they operate. \n\n\n\nThe NBI will outline the private sector’s collective response to the severe droughts that have impacted both the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces\, including the work undertaken to date\, challenges overcome and key lessons learnt in the process. \nThe Embedding Project will consider why and how companies are going beyond traditional materiality assessments to ‘contextualise’ their sustainability performance. This shift helps companies to more effectively manage disruptive risks\, enhance societal acceptance and set clear and credible limits to their involvement in key issues. The Embedding Project will also report on how companies are collaborating with local governments and other role players to enhance local resilience to ensure business success in the medium and long term. \nPlease click here to RSVP for this workshop.

SUMMARY:Launch: South African Risk and Vulnerability Atlas\, 2nd Edition – Durban
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Science and Technology (DST)\, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the National Business Initiative (NBI) are launching the hardcopy launch of the 2nd Edition of the South African Risk and Vulnerability Atlas (SARVA). \nFirst published in 2012\, the SARVA has been updated to reflect an enhanced knowledge of future climate change in South Africa and places greater emphasis on specific themes and case studies. The hard copy SARVA is complemented by an online portal\, managed by the South Africa Earth Observation Network (SAEON). \nThe Global Risks Report published by the World Economic Forum (WEF) states the need for coordinated action to mitigate and adapt to climate change\, in order to address threats to economic development\, development priorities such as social equality and public health and to enable food\, water and energy security. \nSouth Africa has not been spared of the impacts of climate change. The Western Cape for example continues to experience one of its worst droughts in decades\, while the Free State and Northern Cape have suffered substantial depletion of livestock and crop failure. The Atlas presents findings of current research on the risk and vulnerability of key social and economic sectors to climate change. This information is essential to support informed decision-making for both the public and private sector in South Africa. \nCopies of the Atlas will be available at the launch. \nKindly click here should you wish to attend then Durban Launch.

SUMMARY:Thought Leadership Series: Approaches to Economic and Social Transformation - Johannesburg
DESCRIPTION:As part of the NBI’s Transformation Programme\, the Thought Leadership Series (TLS) will explore approaches to contributing towards creating an equal and just South African society. Transformation is a complex and layered issue that continues to pose a significant challenge for companies. The complexity of the issue is confounded further by the context in which organisations operate: sector\, location\, size etc.\, meaning that there are multiple and varied ways to have an impact. The purpose of this Thought Leadership dialogue is to understand approaches to changing our economy and society\, and explore differing views\, as well as convergences\, as ultimately we are all working towards the same end. If you an NBI Member company please join us at our next TLS seminar as we tackle these key questions\, by clicking here.

SUMMARY:Thought Leadership Series: Electric Vehicles on the Rise - Johannesburg
DESCRIPTION:The electric vehicle (EV) market has also been steadily growing. In 2016\, the cumulative sale of electric passenger cars and utility vans passed 1 million units\, and in January 2017\, the monthly sale of passenger EVs (including plug-in hybrids\, all-electric cars and conventional hybrids) surpassed conventional car sales for the first time. But what does this global momentum on EVs mean for South Africa\, if at all? To what extent will this affect local car manufacturers and the local market\, both now and in the future? And is this a sustainable mobility solution for the country? If you an NBI Member company Join us in our next TLS seminar as we tackle these key questions by clicking here.
