SUMMARY:Thought Leadership Series: The 4th Industrial Revolution and The Future of Work in SA
DESCRIPTION:The National Business Initiative (NBI) and Adcorp\, hosted by Barloworld Limited are holding the second thought leadership series that has begun to explore the 4th Industrial Revolution from the perspective of what it might mean for our economy and how we can engage with it to create new opportunities and jobs that support the vision of the National Development Plan (NDP) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This follows the first dialogue session at which subject matter experts shared their views of the trends which are foreshadowed to impact the new world of work. \nThe focus of this second dialogue\, will reflect on the nature of work and the debate around what constitutes decent work both in South Africa and worldwide and opportunities for South Africa within the 4th Industrial Revolution\, drawing on work done by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the International Organisation of Employers (IOE)\, which is the employer representative body at the ILO. The timing of this dialogue is particularly relevant given the fact that President Ramaphosa is now the co-chair of the ILO Global Commission on the Future of Work. DESCRIPTION:Published in June 2017\, the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) have attracted significant local and international interest\, with their recommendations incorporated into key disclosure platforms such as CDP. \nThe Task Force’s recommendations represent an important step in enabling market forces to support a smooth transition to a low-carbon economy\, by identifying the information needed to appropriately assess and price climate-related risks and opportunities. These recommended disclosures should be included in Corporates’ financial reports and the recommendations include practical and illustrative methods on how to do so. \nThe Task Force further recommends addressing future climate-related risks through a forward-looking scenario development process\, undertaken at company level. SUMMARY:Kopano ya Metsi’s Municipal Water Infrastructure Investment Dialogue
DESCRIPTION: Municipalities are the service delivery arm of government. Theirs in an important mandate upon which hinges key areas of South Africa’s social and economic development. At present\, most municipalities face immense challenges relating to the development and maintenance of water and sanitation infrastructure. It is therefore key to understand the challenges municipalities face\, what infrastructure projects they are prioritising and how best to strengthen their water business for social and economic prosperity. \nThe National Business Initiative (NBI)\, in partnership with SALGA\, are hosting to a unique dialogue being held in collaboration with two South African municipalities. The dialogue will serve as a pilot and will bring together two municipalities with a panel of experts to consider each municipality’s specific challenges and water infrastructure needs\, and how these needs might be addressed. DESCRIPTION:The National Business Initiative (NBI) and Network for Business Sustainability (NBS-SA) are hosting a morning workshop to discuss how we ensure that companies and communities are resilient in the face of increasingly frequent and severe disruptions\, such as the Western Cape drought? We will focus on two key dimensions: how companies are contextualising their strategy to enhance resilience and how they are partnering with municipalities and others to enhance the resilience of their companies and the communities in which they operate. \n\n\n\nThe NBI will outline the private sector’s collective response to the severe droughts that have impacted both the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces\, including the work undertaken to date\, challenges overcome and key lessons learnt in the process. \nThe Embedding Project will consider why and how companies are going beyond traditional materiality assessments to ‘contextualise’ their sustainability performance. This shift helps companies to more effectively manage disruptive risks\, enhance societal acceptance and set clear and credible limits to their involvement in key issues. The hard copy SARVA is complemented by an online portal\, managed by the South Africa Earth Observation Network (SAEON). \nThe Global Risks Report published by the World Economic Forum (WEF) states the need for coordinated action to mitigate and adapt to climate change\, in order to address threats to economic development\, development priorities such as social equality and public health and to enable food\, water and energy security. \nSouth Africa has not been spared of the impacts of climate change. The Western Cape for example continues to experience one of its worst droughts in decades\, while the Free State and Northern Cape have suffered substantial depletion of livestock and crop failure. The Atlas presents findings of current research on the risk and vulnerability of key social and economic sectors to climate change. DESCRIPTION:The regulation of carbon emissions in South Africa has become increasingly advanced and multi-faceted. This includes the publication of the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Regulations in April 2017\, the publication of the Pollution Prevention Plans Regulations in July 2017 (and the associated declaration of greenhouse gases as priority pollutants)\, and more recently\, the release of the Carbon Tax Bill for public comment in December 2017. Linked to these existing efforts to manage domestic carbon emissions is the associated process of agreeing carbon budgets for specific companies\, as well as further plans to introduce dedicated climate change legislation in South Africa. This TLS seminar will focus on assisting member companies to understand the current state of domestic carbon regulation\, focusing on the key salient points in each of the major regulations or initiatives underway. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the launch of the NBI’s 2017 CDP South Africa Water report\, where we will consider the status of corporate water resilience in South Africa in the context of significant national water security challenges \n\n\n\nWater scarcity is a global challenge\, but the implications for South Africa are significant. In South Africa it is estimated that by 2030 water demand will exceed supply. Companies have already felt water impacts on their business in a variety of provinces\, with last year’s CDP results listing higher operating costs and production disruptions as the leading impacts to businesses from water-related issues. We will also use CDP data to track the development of South African companies with respect to water risk management\, governance and resilience. We will report on the progress of South African responding companies in the context of global CDP findings and we will also recognise South African companies forming part of the global CDP A List.
