SUMMARY:Green Finance Taxonomy Expansion Webinar Series: Panel Discussion on International Taxonomy Trends and Lessons for South Africa
DESCRIPTION:In April 2022\, the South African National Treasury launched the Green Finance Taxonomy (GFT) version 1 for South Africa\, which serves as a catalogue that defines a minimum set of assets\, projects and sectors as eligible to be defined as “green” or environmentally friendly. The Taxonomy also includes the listing of standards that define economic activities as green\, based on conformance to specific criteria. \nThe Taxonomy’s development has been overseen by a Taxonomy Working Group\, a multi-representative group drawing from national government\, financial sector regulators and the financial services sector. \nSince the launch of the GFT\, the National Business Initiative (NBI) and Carbon Trust have been undertaking a project overseen by the South African National Treasury to embed the GFT into the financial sector ecosystem. To this end\, Carbon Trust and NBI\, are hosting a webinar series covering topics such as international green finance trends and lessons as well as GFT and Environmental\, Social and Governance (ESG) disclosures. \nThe aim of the webinar series is to share insights from a diverse set of speakers and panellists on national sustainability and financial reporting also launch a set of knowledge products and tools on how to deepen GFT implementation and integration at a macro-scale. \nPanellists include: \n\nLouise Gardiner (Sustainable Banking Network Africa Coordinator\, IFC)\nEugene Wong (CEO\, Sustainable Finance Institute Asia)\nCarolina Descio (Senior Manager Green Finance\, Carbon Trust)

SUMMARY:Thought Leadership Series: The Impact of the Gender Pay Gap
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic and resulting lockdowns have aggravated women’s plight both economically and socially. The latest unemployment statistics indicate that the factors affecting women’s pay are institutional\, systemic\, and intersectional. According to the data\, women are disproportionally enduring the brunt of job losses\, inequalities both in the workplace and society\, and moreover are also faced with the ongoing scourge of gender-based violence in South Africa. \nGiven our current context of continued discrimination and exclusion\, the National Business Initiative (NBI) recognises that addressing gender inequality is a critical lever for change. Our aim is to build and enhance representative and diverse workforces\, supported by inclusive organisational cultures\, which unlock innovation and efficiencies to improve business’ performance and understanding of its role in growing and sustaining our economy. \nThe NBI invites you to a Thought Leadership Series: The Impact of the Gender Pay Gap on Wednesday\, 31 August 2022. The discussion will focus on a contextual analysis exploring the workplace\, societal and economic impacts of the Gender Pay Gap. Building off the NBI’s Gender Pay Gap Pilot study\, we intend to contribute to the growing work on pay disparity. Focusing on closing the pay gap in the workplace is essential for the transformation agenda of workplaces across the private sector and the public at large. \nThe discussion aims to explore: \n• The private sector’s role in accelerating support and best practice for improved organisation and employee performance and sustainable business practices.\n• The role of business in collaborative and cooperative efforts to ensure robust approaches in steering winning methodologies.\n• Developing an intersectional approach that explores the need for gender-equality to be outcome-based and the broader socio-economic       impacts of addressing pay disparity.\n• How leaderships across sectors can explore the importance of gender diversity\, and the advancement of women in the workplace and why it is pivotal for organisations to grow\, succeed and be sustainable in challenging economic circumstances. \nCompanies have a responsibility to commit to transformation that disrupts patterns which reinforce and perpetuate the gender pay gap by stimulating pay equity\, and to contribute towards closing the gender pay gap. \nJoin us for this important Thought Leadership Series as we engage with industry experts around transformation issues and find out how the private sector can support the implementation of transformation approaches within their companies.

SUMMARY:Driving Economic Inclusion and Addressing Youth Unemployment through the IRM Hubs
DESCRIPTION:The Installation\, Repair and Maintenance (IRM) Initiative seeks to expand employment and career progression opportunities for young people across the industrial economy. Addressing the youth unemployment crisis in South Africa requires a collaborative approach that extends beyond labour absorption in the formal sector. The IRM Initiative acknowledges that supporting growth-oriented entrepreneurial activity is a key component for ensuring training and employment opportunities for young people within their local communities. \nIn support of the government’s efforts to revitalise the South African economy\, following the negative effects of Covid-19\, the IRM Initiative seeks to strengthen Small and Micro Enterprises (SMEs)\, particularly those based in township communities\, thus enabling SMEs to grow and prosper\, while broadening the base for on-the-job training and employment creation. \nThe National Business Initiative (NBI) has launched two IRM hubs in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal to uncover entrepreneurial potential amongst township artisans and create conditions for their potential to be realised\, through increased market access with the formal sector\, as well as enterprise and skills development. These hubs have supported 27 growth orientated IRM Enterprises over the past year and we will be scaling up these numbers over the next decade. Further hubs will be established in strategic locations across the country. \nJoin us on Wednesday\, 17 August 2022\, as the NBI hosts an industry event showcasing the IRM hubs. The event will serve as a platform to demonstrate the value of the hubs in bringing township enterprises closer to formal sector supply and value chains\, and also identify the potential for strategic partnerships\, which can benefit corporates in their contribution to more inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

SUMMARY:Climate Pathways and Just Transition for South Africa Report Launch – Energy Sector
DESCRIPTION:The National Business Initiative (NBI)\, Business Unity South Africa (BUSA)\, and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG)\, have explored over the past two years\, pathways to achieve a net-zero economy within a fair share carbon budget\, and in the process lift people out of poverty\, inequality\, and unemployment. \nWe are now proud to announce the launch of our integrated energy report focused on the energy sector titled: “It All Hinges on Renewables – The Massive and Urgent Energy Transformation South Africa Needs To Get Right.” This is the first report in a series of reports that we will be releasing between now and the end of November 2022. \nFindings from the report highlights that South Africa’s Just Transition pathway to a competitive\, net-zero economy hinges on the country’s ability to unlock its globally advantaged\, high-potential wind and solar energy resources at scale and at an unprecedented pace. By developing an energy system anchored by renewables\, South Africa can contribute to solving its current energy crisis\, and improve the affordability\, availability\, and reliability of our power supply – all while enabling new green industries to build the foundation of a globally competitive economy that is resilient to the trade risk arising from a transition to net-zero. \nThe event will also be live streamed on the day to the NBI and BCG YouTube channels. Please see links below: \n\n\n\nNBI YouTube channel\nBCG YouTube channel

SUMMARY:Reflecting on the Zondo Commission of Inquiry: Lessons for the Private Sector
DESCRIPTION:The National Business Initiative’s (NBI) work on Building Trust and Accountability aims to reimagine South Africa as a society and economy built on trust. We do this by strengthening ethics and governance in the Private Sector\, enhancing the capacity for responsible business practices and accountability. In turn\, this strengthens the relationship between Business and broader society. \nThe Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture\, better known as the Zondo Commission\, was set up by former South African President\, Jacob Zuma\, to investigate allegations of state capture\, corruption\, and fraud in the public sector in South Africa. \nWhile focussing primarily on the public sector\, the findings indicated widespread corruption in both the public and private sectors in South Africa. The Zondo Commission findings “bust the abiding myths that the private sector is more ethical than the public sector and is less susceptible to corrupt practices given the many anti-corruption regulations. ’’ Find out more.

SUMMARY:NBI COP27 Roadshow Launch
DESCRIPTION:Calling South African Business to be part of the UN Climate Conference in Egypt\, as Africa takes centre stage at COP27 \nThe last UN Climate Conference\, COP26\, was highly successful for South Africa\, showcasing the country’s enhanced climate ambition\, enabled by collaborative action between government\, business\, and other key actors. South Africa’s enhanced climate ambition resulted in a historic deal between the United States\, United Kingdom\, Germany\, France\, and the European Union to offer US$8.5 billion in climate finance to support South Africa’s Just Transition. \nWith the foundation laid\, it is time to demonstrate even deeper climate action. This opportunity is presented by COP27. \nBuilding on the momentum achieved at COP26\, we invite you to join us at the upcoming South Africa Pavilion COP27 Roadshow event as we highlight the key focal areas for this year’s pavilion\, outline our programme of work for the Road to COP27\, and call on business to collaborate with us in the delivery of this key national platform. \nWhy is this important? \nClimate change is one of the biggest threats to our global economy but tackling it is also one of the world’s big economic opportunities. Climate threats are amplified on the African continent\, where impacts are further exacerbated due to high levels of social and economic vulnerability. The recent devastation caused by floods in KwaZulu-Natal\, closely preceded by Cyclone Idai\, emphasise the reality\, proximity and enormity of the climate crisis for South Africa\, and the continent more broadly. \nThe African climate response is a development and investment opportunity which must be realised to achieve a just transition to net zero\, as well as climate resilient economies and societies across the continent.     \nCOP27 will take place in Sharm El-Sheikh (Egypt) in November 2022. This African COP is a pivotal moment for governments and business across the continent\, to showcase and position the range of climate investment prospects that exist in Africa and to amplify the value of collaborative action. COP27 also presents a moment to share insights into the requirements and enablers for implementation of both mitigation and adaptation measures\, and what is needed to ensure that the transition to a net zero and climate resilient economy by 2050 is just\, inclusive and addresses socio-economic needs. \nThe South Africa Pavilion is a prime opportunity for business and government to demonstrate climate leadership and action\, track progress against climate commitments\, share insight with an international audience and collaborate to tackle South Africa’s climate needs and opportunities. The Pavilion at COP27 will be hosted jointly by the South African government and business\, coordinated by the Department of Forestry\, Fisheries\, and the Environment (DFFE) and National Business Initiative (NBI). \nWe invite you to join us on 24 May at our COP27 Roadshow Launch\, to discover how you can be a part of this momentous occasion for the African continent.

SUMMARY:Intergenerational Leadership Dialogue: Women in Sports
DESCRIPTION:Research and first-hand experiences show us that the persistent challenges faced by women in sports are closely linked to gender inequality. For our latest Intergenerational Leadership Dialogue\, we are exploring the impact of gender equity for Women in Sports. \nNurturing talent and  skill in the sporting sector in South Africa is multifaceted. Success for the sporting sector as a whole requires garnering investment from the private sector on one hand\, as well as supporting government interventions to facilitate transformation and broader social equity\, both on and off the field. Through sponsorships and investments\, the private sector has demonstrated an interest in supporting young talent\, nurturing these individuals into formidable national sportspersons. \nThis dialogue is intended to unpack and explore the private sector’s role and support of women’s sports in South Africa\, particularly how this impacts young female talent\, as well as interrogating gaps and opportunities for greater equity across local sports. Through engagements with a panel of experts across government\, private sector and academia\, some of the guiding questions for this discussion include: \n\nHow has the private sector contributed towards transformation in the South African sports sector?\nWhat successful collaborations within the private sector have been accessed or harnessed to ensure support of sportswomen at a Tertiary level?\nWhat policies has Government enacted towards ensuring sports women are paid equally to men?\nHow are key stakeholders dismantling the pay inequalities faced by women in the sports industry?\n\nIntergenerational Dialogue Series \nThe National Business Initiative (NBI) has developed the Intergenerational Leadership Dialogues as a platform to critically explore how workplaces engage generational differences as an important aspect of transformation and equity. These discussions are intended to elevate the voices of young people at work\, facilitating innovative thinking and reimagining leadership.

SUMMARY:Pride in Belonging Edu-Series Launch
DESCRIPTION:The National Business Initiative (NBI) has produced six short videos as part of our Pride in Belonging Edu-Series\, which focuses on the belonging of LGBTQIAP+ employees in the workplace. In 2020\, the NBI’s Social Transformation unit concluded research on Understanding the Experiences of LGBTQI+ Employees in the Workplace. By understanding these experiences\, companies are in a better position to formulate transformative policies and create inclusive cultures\, which prioritise belonging. \nThe video series serves as an educational platform\, whereby employees who identify with the LGBTQIAP+ community have their experiences elevated\, while advocating for companies to make structural and social changes that prioritise belonging. In addition\, these moving personal accounts and experiences engage with the emerging knowledge around how organisations are accelerating transformation in the workplace. Currently\, there is ongoing research and development exploring how companies foster a culture of belonging for employees\, through transformative policies on gender and sexuality. As part of the Transformation & Equity pathway\, the NBI continues to engage companies through dialogues\, working groups\, research and advocacy to achieve key transformation goals. \nIt is imperative for companies to continuously engage with the nuances of belonging in the workplace\, as this has a correlation with an organisation’s ability to attract and retain talent\, extend support and solidarity to the LGBTQIAP+ community at work\, ensure the company fosters an environment which prioritises diverse participation\, and create social values in line with the principles of a purpose driven entity.

SUMMARY:Just Transition Pathways Report Launch: AFOLU Sector Decarbonisation and The Role of Gas for a Just Transition Reports
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce the release of the next two report chapters from the Just Transition Pathways research project: \n\nThe AFOLU Sector Decarbonisation Pathway Report\nThe Role of Gas for a Just Transition Report\n\nThis project is a partnership between the National Business Initiative (NBI)\, Business Unity South Africa (BUSA) and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). These chapters form part of the broader series focussed on developing decarbonisation pathways for sectors of the South African economy. \nThe Agriculture\, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) chapter explores measures and impacts of the transition to a low-carbon\, climate resilient AFOLU sector\, while the Gas report focuses on understanding the role of gas in South Africa’s decarbonisation journey. \nLike many developing countries\, South Africa has the task of balancing the urgent need for a just economic transition and growth with ensuring environmental resources are sustainably used and consumed\, while also responding to the physical impacts of climate change. These sectors play a critical role in responding to these challenges. \nKey findings from each of these reports: \n\nThe South African AFOLU sector is at significant climate risk and requires the development of a climate resilient AFOLU sector. This will ensure food security\,  sustainable healthy diets for all South Africans and maintain the sector’s socio-economic contribution.\nIf affordably supplied\, gas can play a key transition role by enabling variability management in the power sector and substitute coal feedstock in industry and particularly in the synfuels sector.\n\nBackground: \nSouth Africa is extremely vulnerable to the physical risk of climate change and the transition risk presented by a rapid global trend to a zero-carbon future. There is a pressing need to cut greenhouse gas emissions significantly to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change globally. We also need to consider green industrialisation as an opportunity to address South Africa’s economic stagnation and to respond to the global economic crisis triggered by the devastating COVID-19 Pandemic. To enable our economic recovery\, ensure long term competitiveness and social resilience in the face of future climate and transition risk\, South Africa needs a Just Transition plan to avoid getting left behind. We therefore need to work toward a goal of net zero emissions by 2050. \nJoin the webinar on Tuesday\, 2 November 2021\, to learn more about the results and consider implications and opportunities for South Africa with our multistakeholder panel.

SUMMARY:Just Transition Pathways Project: Public release of the mining sector and the petrochemicals and chemicals sector decarbonisation reports
DESCRIPTION:The decarbonisation report chapters for both the mining as well as the petrochemicals and chemicals sectors are now ready to be shared! We are excited for you to join us as we release these findings as part of the broader NBI-BUSA-BCG Just Transition Pathways project for public consultation. \nThe National Business Initiative (NBI) launched the Just Transition Pathways research project in 2020 in partnership with Business Unity South Africa (BUSA) and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Together\, with a broad range of stakeholders\, including business\, government\, civil society and academia\, we sought to identify decarbonisation pathways for key sectors of the South African economy\, aligned with the goal of net zero emissions by 2050. This was done to show that it is indeed possible to decarbonise our economy and to ensure a Just Transition. \nA Just Transition is an opportunity for South Africa to manage both physical climate and transition risks\, effectively contributing to global climate response efforts and addressing our current socio-economic challenges. In the wake of the devastating COVID-19 pandemic\, a Just Transition offers a way to foster an inclusive and equitable economic recovery and growth\, unlocking green investment opportunities and economic competitiveness for key sectors. This part of our Just Transitions project seeks to identify techno-economic decarbonisation pathways for key sectors of our economy and highlight what critical decisions and actions are necessary to enable a Just Transition for South Africa. \nThese report chapters summarise the results from the development of both the mining as well as petrochemicals and chemicals sector decarbonisation pathways towards net zero emissions by 2050. \nJoin the webinar on 12th October 2021 as we highlight what the possible decarbonisation pathways could look like for each of these sectors and consider their implications and opportunities for South Africa.

SUMMARY:CEO Dialogue: Gender Diversity and Women Empowerment in the Workplace
DESCRIPTION:Imperial in partnership with the National Business Initiative (NBI)\, under the NBI’s Social Transformation: Bold and Transformative Leadership Pathway are hosting a CEO Thought Leadership Dialogue as we unpack Gender Diversity and Women Empowerment in the Workplace. \nThe NBI’s CEO Thought Leadership Dialogue Series is an important virtual engagement for business leaders. It is an opportunity to explore both challenges and opportunities\, lessons and best practice vital to our economic recovery\, as well as co-created approaches and interventions that drive transformation within workplaces and strengthen the role of business in society. \nIn this dialogue with Imperial CEO\, Mohammed Akoojee and Executive Vice President: Corporate Affairs and Investor Relations\, Esha Mansingh\, we will explore the importance of gender diversity and the advancement of women in the workplace and why it is both necessary and pivotal for organisations to grow\, succeed and be sustainable in challenging economic circumstances. \nThe discussion aims to understand the importance of gender equity being driven from the top\, in order to ensure commitment and create an enabling environment for change. We also examine the role of mentorship in supporting growth and empowerment. We aim to understand first-hand the experience of Esha Mansingh being a young woman in leadership and what the guidance of having a visionary leader meant in spearheading her career and success. By exploring the impact thereof\, we can understand how it has shaped women’s empowerment within Imperial and what she has been able to achieve as a result. \nThis thought leadership discussion will also enable conversation around best practice and the commitment to gender equality. \nCall to Action: \nWe call on CEOs to take action and prioritise transformation and equity as a key focal area in driving business commitment to advance transformation as a normative culture in the workplace. This commitment should be driven by a realisation that addressing gender equity and inclusion is not a competitive issue\, but a societal imperative.

SUMMARY:The public release of the Power Sector Decarbonisation Report from the NBI Just Transition Pathways project - Our future is renewable
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to share the first in a series of report chapters on the decarbonisation pathways for the South African economy. Join us on 11th August 2021 as we release the findings of the NBI Just Transition Pathways project for the South African power sector as a draft chapter for public consultation. \nBackground: \nSouth Africa and her people are extremely vulnerable to the physical risk of climate change and our economy is vulnerable to the transition risk presented by a rapid global trend to a low-carbon future. This trend is driven by the dire need to cut greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change globally. We also need to consider green industrialisation as an opportunity to get us out of the global economic crisis triggered by the devastating COVID-19 Pandemic. To support our economic recovery and ensure long term competitiveness and social resilience in the face of future climate and transition risk\, South Africa needs a Just Transition plan or we will risk getting left behind. We therefore need to work toward a goal of net zero emissions by 2050. \nIt is also essential that the South African business community is able to contribute constructively to conversations around what a just transition looks like in South Africa.  Our future must be ecologically and economically sustainable and just to ensure no one is left behind. \nIn response to the above imperatives\, the NBI launched the Just Transition Pathways research project in 2020 in partnership with Business Unity South Africa (BUSA) and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Together with participation from a broad range of stakeholders from business\, government\, civil society\, and academia\, we sought to identify decarbonisation pathways for key sectors of the South African economy aligned with net zero emissions by 2050. This was done to show that it is indeed possible to decarbonise our economy and to ensure a just transition. \nThis report chapter summarises the results from the power sector study and charts the technical and socio-economic pathway to net zero emissions by 2050. Two key findings of this report are: \n\nBy leveraging its world class renewable energy sources\, South Africa can fully decarbonise its power sector\, while unlocking the opportunity to stimulate economic growth and job creation.\nThe transformation of South Africa’s power system can result in net-positive job creation\, if South Africa can successfully localise elements of the renewable energy value chain and effectively re-skill the workforce.\n\nJoin the webinar on 11 August 2021 to learn more about the results and consider implications and opportunities for South Africa with our multistakeholder panel.

SUMMARY:Launch of WBCSD’s Vision 2050: Time to Transform
DESCRIPTION:The National Business Initiative (NBI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) are hosting the South African launch of Vision 2050: Time to Transform. We’ll be asking how business can lead the transformations needed for 9+ billion people to live well\, within planetary boundaries by 2050. \nThe world faces three critical challenges: the climate emergency\, nature loss and mounting inequality. Only collaboration at unprecedented levels between business\, government and civil society\, will create the impact and scale required to transform our systems to achieve our goal by 2050. WBCSD has not only imagined that future\, they have been putting proactive steps in place to make this vision a reality. \nVision 2050: Time to Transform provides a framework to guide business action in line with the urgency of these challenges. As the local implementation partner of the WBCSD\, NBI has participated in the co-creation of this vision. We want to see sustainable societies around the world and a South Africa that is thriving and inclusive economically\, environmentally and socially. Vision 2050 can contribute to our thinking and help accelerate our members efforts towards achieving this transformation. \nJoin us on Thursday 15 July for the South African launch of WBCSD’s Vision 2050 update to find out more about this comprehensive framework for business action. We will discuss the nine transformation pathways and provide new perspectives on the mindset shifts required for real transformation. \nKeryn James\, Group Chief Executive Officer of ERM and Vice-Chair of WBCSD’s Executive Committee\, will provide a keynote speech exploring how Vision 2050 guides companies on their transformation journeys to 2050. \nThe event will include company representatives from a range of key economic sectors as well as the following speakers: \n\nKeryn James (Keynote Speaker): Group CEO\, ERM and Vice-Chair\, WBCSD Executive Committee\nJoanne Yawitch: CEO\, NBI\nFilippo Veglio: Managing Director & Senior Management Team\, WBCSD\n\nTogether with the WBCSD\, we aim to journey on this transformation trajectory with business to 2050. SUMMARY:Collectively Growing Township Economies: An opportunity to create bridges between the formal and township economy
DESCRIPTION:Persistent and increasingly high levels of youth unemployment in South Africa present one of the greatest obstacles to achieving equitable and inclusive economic growth. Given the scale of the challenges and the current economic context\, youth unemployment will not be solved through labour absorption in the formal sector alone. Growing our Township Economies is vital for creating entry-level learning and employment opportunities for young people where they live\, and also to upskill marginalised youth who lack formal post-school education\, with the skills that will enhance employability. \nThe Installation\, Repair and Maintenance (IRM) Initiative seeks to expand learning and employment opportunities for young people in a variety of artisanal fields. In order to achieve this\, the National Business Initiative (NBI) has focussed on identifying and growing entrepreneurial artisanal enterprises in township communities\, through enterprise development\, skills development and market access\, on the proviso that they train and employ young skilled IRM workers. The scope of IRM enterprises could include Manufacturers\, Plumbers\, Electricians\, General Maintenance\, Domestic Appliance Repairers\, Autobody Repairers\, Cellphone Repairers and others. \nThe NBI invites you to attend a virtual event where we will present our IRM Township Hub Programme through which companies in the formal sector can derive value and engage with township-based IRM enterprises to increase opportunities for enterprise growth and employment. \nThe first two hubs are being established in Ekurhuleni\, Gauteng and iLembe\, KZN with the aim to roll these out in township communities across the country\, over the next 5 years. \nWe look forward to your attendance\, as well as to your valuable input. \nPlease click here to RSVP.

SUMMARY:Intergenerational Leadership Dialogue: Solidarity in the Workplace
DESCRIPTION:Why are Intergenerational Leadership Dialogues crucial for achieving solidarity in the workplace? \nAchieving solidarity in the workplace is a nuanced and complex journey with intergenerational dialogues as one of the most important vehicles to transport us there. Enhanced solidarity creates more inclusive work cultures and therefore more cohesive workplaces. \nThe National Business Initiative (NBI) has recognised that intergenerational leadership is an important aspect of transformation and equity and have created a platform to critically explore how workplaces engage around generational differences. These discussions intend to elevate the voices of young people at work\, facilitating innovative thinking and reimagining leadership. This particular discussion in the Intergenerational Leadership Dialogue series will look at the importance of Solidarity in the Workplace. \nAchieving  solidarity requires workplace cultures that are rooted in empathy\, belonging and community. The workplace is a space with varying power structures\, systems and processes\, all of which intercept to either enhance or diminish solidarity amongst employees. During this dialogue\, the discussion will focus on how solidarity is built across generations\, both at work and society at large\, as a vehicle of transformation.

SUMMARY:Climate Finance Accelerator South Africa Launch
DESCRIPTION:The year 2021 is pivotal in the race to tackle climate change\, and countries have a limited amount of time for action. Responding effectively to this global challenge involves a massive transformation in financial markets. The scale of financial and other resources needed to achieve this transformation is in the order of hundreds of billions of US dollars.   \nThis transformation must involve a country-driven shift toward policies and technologies that catalyse new investments and mainstream climate change into existing systems\, as articulated in countries’ climate commitments. South Africa requires a clear pathway to financing and implementing its climate targets as part of achieving a just transition for the country. \nA key barrier to climate action is the shortage of projects able to attract the finance and investment necessary for large-scale implementation. The financing available and the capacities to absorb such resources vary across different countries\, something which the National Business Initiative (NBI) and GreenCape have worked to address in South Africa over the past few years. \nNBI in partnership with GreenCape have recently been appointed as the delivery partners for the Climate Finance Accelerator (CFA) in South Africa. The CFA is a technical assistance programme funded by UK International Climate Finance\, globally led by PwC\, in collaboration with Ricardo. \nThe main objective of the CFA programme is to improve the flow of climate finance in South Africa which will support the implementation of South Africa’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)\, thereby delivering emissions reductions and raising overall climate ambition. \nThe CFA: \n\nOffers opportunities for project developers\, financiers and policy makers to work together to identify funding options to get capital flowing to low carbon projects\, with the aim of enabling the development of a pipeline of low carbon projects.\nWill help to turn potential investment opportunities into fully funded projects. It aims to unlock great ideas and transformative technologies by enabling projects that would otherwise remain on the drawing board to be financed.\nWill also contribute to embedding a permanent CFA process in South Africa which will create a sustainable model for leveraging private capital to help fund the NDC and reduce emissions.\n\nThe NBI\, GreenCape\, the British High Commission Pretoria\, the Department for Business Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the CFA team are pleased to invite you to attend the launch of CFA South Africa to provide targeted support for expanding South Africa’s pipeline of climate projects able to attract finance.   \nThe objectives of the launch event are threefold: \n\nDetail the scope of the CFA in South Africa\, the expected benefits\, and the opportunities for stakeholder engagement and involvement;\nProvide a high-level overview of the key findings from the climate finance landscape mapping\, including gaps in the climate finance supply chain; and\nDiscuss investment barriers and opportunities in relevant low carbon sectors in South Africa.\n\nPlease click here to register for this Zoom event.

SUMMARY:Launch of Transformation Blueprint for South African Companies
DESCRIPTION:Why is it important to develop a Transformation Blueprint for South African Companies? \nRecent shifts in socio-political and economic systems mean that businesses have had to respond to workplace dynamics by taking into consideration various identities and how these collectively impact the world of work. These shifts have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 global pandemic\, which has had extensive implications on inclusivity and transformation in the workplace. \nTo respond to these issues\, the National Business Initiative’s (NBI) Inclusion Working Group set out to build innovative and collaborative approaches amongst member companies in response to transformation challenges\, with the aim of ensuring diverse and productive workforces. \nThe Transformation Blueprint is the culmination of the Working Group’s interest and engagements on a range of topics linked to inclusion and belonging that build on best practice. Additionally\, the Blueprint reflects current social complexities and indicates how these complexities will impact businesses in their transformation agendas\, now and in the future\, from behavioural changes to policy amendments. The Transformation Blueprint Report is intended to be used as a guide for organisations as they map their transformation journeys. \nWe invite you to join us as we officially launch our Transformation Blueprint\, unpack key terms and explore important insights from both employee experiences as well as organisational reviews. These outputs provide a deeper understanding of the process required to create a Blueprint that is context specific\, yet adaptable to continuous social changes. Furthermore\, we will detail the opportunities for how different perspectives can impact company values and transformation structures. \nPlease join us online on 26 May 2021 to officially launch our Transformation Blueprint Report and discuss important findings from the process of developing our Transformation Blueprint. \nClick here to RSVP.

SUMMARY:Developing Decarbonisation Pathways for Industry to Inform a Just Transition in South Africa Aligned to Net Zero by 2050
DESCRIPTION:Partnerships between government and business are crucial to build solutions that meet global\, national\, sectoral and corporate-level climate change commitments. Global industry is critically appraising future options and transformation needs and an increasing number of corporations are proposing their own net zero targets and plans. \nThe NBI and IDDRI are working to support individual businesses and sectors in exploring what deep decarbonisation pathways could look like for heavy emitting industries and value chains in South Africa and globally. As part of our research and engagement\, we are facilitating a South Africa-EU dialogue on long-term industrial pathways in collaboration with business and policymakers. \nThis event is the first in a series of engagements that will form part of the South Africa-EU dialogue on just industrial transitions. The series aims to promote constructive discussions about decarbonisation pathways\, investment opportunities and policy-related enablers for effective transitions from a business perspective. \nThis first dialogue\, to be held on the 19th May\, will begin with a plenary session for the South African and EU policy and decision- makers to frame technical decarbinisation pathways for a Just Transition to a carbon neutral economy and the role industry and international cooperation are expected to play. \nKey speakers include: \n\nMs. Joanne Yawitch\, CEO NBI\nDr. Riina Kionka\, EU Ambassador to the Republic of South Africa\nMs. Nomfundo Tshabalala\, Director-General of the Department of Forestry\, Fisheries and Environment\nDr. Chrispian Olver\, Executive Director Presidential Climate Change Coordination Commission\nMr. Sébastien Treyer\,  Executive Director of IDDRI\n\nWe will then have the opportunity to unpack concrete challenges\, enablers across value chains and emerging opportunities for collaboration between South Africa and the EU\, specifically for steel. We will also  take a deep dive into understanding what examples of South African and European private sector-driven decarbonisation pathways look like for specific industries including chemicals (incl. petrochemicals) and cement as part of a Just Transition. \nEach sector-level breakout session will include the following: \n\nSector decarbonisation pathway in South Africa\nSector decarbonisation pathway in Europe\nSA & EU Business facilitated Q&A session on international value chains and trade\, technology development and cooperation and country-wide visions implication\nFacilitated discussion on bilateral collaboration opportunities\, identification  of opportunities for investment\, foster knowledge/ solution exchange and identify key enabling policy options\n\nThe NBI and IDDRI invite you to participate in this interactive session and knowledge sharing between South African and EU experts.

SUMMARY:COP26 South African Pavilion Roadshow Launch
DESCRIPTION:Demonstrating government and business ambition and credibility\, as well as positioning South Africa as an attractive low-carbon investment destination \nClimate change is one of the biggest threats to our global economy and tackling it is also one of the world’s big economic opportunities. The 26th International Climate Change Conference (COP26)\, to be held in Glasgow\, UK  in November 2021\, will be a pivotal moment for governments and business across the globe to make ambitious commitments to tackle climate change and achieve a Just Transition. The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified calls for a green recovery and building back better. \nIn order to achieve a green recovery and greater economic competitiveness in the future\, South Africa will have to develop not only robust net-zero plans but also position itself as preferred low-carbon and climate resilient investment destination in a manner that balances economic\, social and environmental priorities. \nSouth Africa’s key trade partners have already committed to deep carbon cuts. To access these new markets and capital\, South Africa needs to position itself as a credible market. Backed by an enhanced country level contribution to global climate efforts\, South Africa’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) will enable South Africa to access trade and finance opportunities fundamental to transitioning our economy and maintaining its competitiveness. \nCOP26 is an opportunity for government and business to jointly develop and affirm South Africa’s long-term commitments towards net-zero emissions by 2050 and a climate resilient future\, underpinned by a Just Transition. South Africa’s transition is an opportunity to stimulate an economic recovery that is just: meaning that it reduces inequality\, maintains and strengthens social cohesion\, eradicates poverty\, ensures participation in a new economy for all\, and creates a socio-economic context which is resilient to the physical impacts of climate change. \nThe National Business Initiative (NBI) and the Department of Forestry\, Fisheries\, and Environment (DFFE) take pleasure in inviting NBI members to attend this COP26 South African Pavilion Roadshow Launch that will highlight how the business community can support South Africa’s presence at COP26 and partner to deliver a successful Pavilion that will demonstrate and promote South Africa as a low-carbon and climate resilient trade investment destination.

SUMMARY:Enhancing NDC Ambition and the Importance of Private Sector Participation
DESCRIPTION:The latest science from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) indicates that more urgent and rapid reductions in emissions are required by all countries. A failure to limit emissions to 1.5 degrees leaves us vulnerable to the impacts of severe climate change. Although some real progress has been made\, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has indicated that current individual level contributions are not adequate to prevent dangerous global warming this century. \nCalls are mounting for countries to enhance their climate ambition or Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Climate Agreement\, in the run up to 26th International Climate Change Conference (COP26) to be held in Glasgow\, Scotland\, in November 2021. \nBold and fearless leadership will be essential in ensuring a successful ‘Just Transition’ to a net-zero economy. A ‘Just Transition’ incorporates socio-economic and historic considerations with the principles of equity and inclusiveness. Countries like Indonesia\, for example\, have been able to reduce fossil fuel subsidies allowing for larger portions of the fiscus to go towards their infrastructure and social development. \nThe South African Cabinet has released the country’s revised NDC for public comment. An ambitious NDC for South Africa is necessary for triggering the structural changes and building the trust required to achieve a ‘Just Transition’. In the eyes of the international community it demonstrates our commitment to making a fair share contribution to global climate response measures. Credibility based on an ambitious NDC will enhance our access to investment\, markets and climate finance. If this ambition is shared across geographies\, it will smooth the path for international cooperative approaches\, including between industries. \nThe National Business Initiative (NBI) and IDDRI invite you to join us as we discuss perspectives on\, and approaches toward raising NDC globally and at national level in developing country contexts. We will hear from countries like Indonesia\, India\, Mexico and South Africa and talk about NDC ambition in relation to key elements relevant to developing country contexts such as jobs\, the ‘Just Transition’\, competitiveness and inclusive growth.
