Science Based Targets Network South African Outreach

Capacity building for Science Based Targets for Nature (SBTs for nature)

Purpose:

In 2024, the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) contracted the National Business Initiative (NBI) to develop a South African corporate engagement strategy. This strategy was co-developed with a working group comprising corporates, consulting partners, and NGOs, ensuring it reflects the realities and ambitions of the local business landscape.

Guided by this strategy, we are now implementing a capacity-building programme for our corporate members, focusing on Step 1 of the SBTN target-setting process. The aim is to equip company representatives with the technical depth and hands-on experience needed to complete:

  • Step 1a: Materiality Screening
  • Step 1b: Value Chain Assessment

This programme is designed to support companies in preparing for Step 1 validation, a critical milestone in setting science-based targets for nature.
