South Africa’s green economy is beginning to generate significant new demand for skills, enterprises and workers. The question is whether young South Africans will be positioned to participate in that opportunity.
The Summit will explore how the transition to a decarbonised economy can be leveraged to address youth unemployment through access to relevant skills, employment, and sustainable income-generating opportunities. It must also consider the key levers within the skills and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) ecosystem that need to be strengthened to build institutional capacity, support effective implementation, and enable young people to transition into sustainable livelihoods.
By bringing together senior leaders from business and government, training institutions, youth employment intermediaries, enterprise development organisations and development partners, it will also address how South Africa can translate the opportunities emerging from the transition to a decarbonised economy into meaningful pathways for youth, with a particular focus on ensuring that young women are able to participate and benefit.
Through Action Labs focused on Implementation, Collaboration and Donor Coordination, the Summit aims to focus on:
Establishing alignment amongst the various youth employment pathways to reduce duplication, strengthen impact, and support implementation of green economy interventions;
Reinforcing and strengthening existing partnerships that are advancing skills development and growth of the township economy for the green economy; and
Bolstering donor coordination and identifying joint co-funding opportunities that maximise collective impact, particularly for the Just Transition.
