The session forms part of TAF’s ongoing technical assistance process, in partnership with the NBI’s Ethical Supplier Platform to diagnose system gaps and co-design improvements across reporting channels, legal support, retaliation safeguards, and stakeholder coordination.
What to expect:
We will convene a balanced group of SMMEs and business leaders, government and regulatory partners, civil society and academia, and international experts to validate preliminary findings from interviews and desk research, refine the structure and guidance of a practical SMME Whistleblowing Toolkit, and build consensus on a reform roadmap to enhance trust, accessibility, and protection in reporting systems.
This discussion is intended to specifically address barriers identified through Ethical Supplier research, including fear of retaliation and blacklisting, limited awareness of protections under the Protected Disclosures Act, and low trust in existing reporting channels.
The programme includes a brief presentation of draft findings and initial toolkit recommendations, followed by a facilitated discussion focused on strengthening usability and anonymity of reporting channels, clarifying legal-aid pathways for SMMEs, and defining concrete coordination actions across the private sector, government, and support organisations.
Inputs are to be incorporated into the final diagnostic report and toolkit, and will inform the NBI Joint Masterclass Series planned for later this year.
Event Details:
Date: Thursday, 13 November 2025 Time: 10:00 – 12:30(SAST) Followed by a networking lunch Venue: Future Space, 61 Katherine Street, Sandton, 2196
You are also welcome to suggest additional participants – particularly SMME representatives or practitioners with hands-on experience of whistleblowing systems.
We look forward to your participation in this important conversation to strengthen integrity and accountability across South Africa’s SMME supply chains.
On behalf of the European Union’s Enhancing Accountability Programme – Technical Assistance Facility (TAF), in partnership with the National Business Initiative (NBI), we are pleased to invite you to a validation roundtable to inform practical reforms that will make whistleblowing safer and more effective for South African SMMEs.
